I wonder who approached who with regards to Fantasy Flight taking over from Black Industries?

Dunno, but FFG don't do miniatures and GW gave them an underdeveloped sector of the galaxy to go play in!

Very nice books by the way.

FFG do do miniatures. Bundled in games and separately.

Talisman now has them, as will the upcoming Chaos in the Old World Game.

The only difference is that the market sector that FF deal with, is one that they are good at and one that GW aren't interested in and aren't good at.

FF can easily do a better job of handling any Games Workshop based product, except mass combat wargames.

We'd likely need many millions of pounds worth of shares before they'd pay the slightest bit of attention.

It's on my imaginary list of 'things to do if I won the lottery' (and had plenty enough to enjoy not working for the rest of my life, while also paying for silly amounts of shares and setting up a new epic selling company). Sadly the little numbers just aren't co-operating

I don't get mad. I get highly detailed prototypes and make spin casting molds.

Those shares are expensive! I bet that if one of you guys did win the lotto, got some shares and pushed Epic, you'd make your money back when the stock goes up.

But outside of winning the lottary...

Ha ha. Looks like that's the only answer. If you want something done right, do it yourself I guess.

And they are fantastic.

If they won't support the game, f em.  There are plenty of after market sellers on the web of exisitng models.  If not, find an aquatic mammal with CAD software, and very imaginative naming conventions (what does zombie robot stand for again?)  Or scratch build your own with plasticard and greenstuff.

As far as play locations, I've had to seek out players and tables.  One of my FLGS owners really wants to try epic, and even wants me to demo it one night at his store, I just have to paint up my IG and Orks so I can.  So it looks like if I want to play the game, I need to be the ambassador of Epic in Denver.

I've played a few games with locals that I met through these boards, and I'm slowly introducing my geek group to playing.  But for the most part, my group is more interested in playing Catan, Munchkin, and Bang!.  And one of the draw backs, for us really, is time limits and multi-player games.  We usually have at least 4 people playing, and it is impossible for me to fit two tables in my home, so i've used Groov3r's intro 1K lists he published on BoLS and played a 4 player annihilation throw down.

Everyone had a blast, except me, (stuck with marines and 3 people out to kill me since I was "experienced.")  The second game I hosted with the same number of players, we played a "Tanks and Titans" game.  That was a blast, everyone loved it.  But I've still yet to play a full 3K+ game with anyone from my group.  But it is still fun.

Gods, I haven't played a wargame where I live since I was, umm, 12 :) Still when I'm actually in London there are still a few clubs left, mostly in pubs which is a problem if you are under 16 or so.

GW US experimented with BFG. Pushed it, sales went up and sales of 40k dropped nearly as much. So nixed that idea. GW don't want to have a massive range that sells for x, they want a small range that sells for x+1.

That's surprising. I thought that BFG and Epic players were similar in that they were older players looking for an alternative to 40k.

Could GW be dropping Epic because it sees it as a threat to 40k revenue?

Nah, I think its simply 10 pounds of support (inventory costs, advertising, shelf space etc) gets 100 pounds of sales for core, 30 pounds for Epic (numbers imaginary, but you see the point). For x investment they get more from other lines and don't want to fracture their market.

There is ONE other possibility, which is that GW take Specialist Games and turn them into a semi-independent but GW umbrella company like Forgeworld. I for one am hoping this is going to become a reality, as it appears at this time to be the only way forward for the specialist games.

Back when GW had lots of money and could afford such side projects, that of course existed as the Fanatic studio...

...however GW as a company has been doing pretty poorly for the last few years (It's been about 18 months since they last paid a dividend on any of their shares IIRC, and before that they were borrowing money in order to pay the dividend...), and just can't afford such a risk right now.

Warhammer Historical (A rules only arm) recently got folded back into forge world. GW ain't expanding again any time soon.

These are some interesting discussions. I kind of reacted when I read this in Captsins post:

"much of the Epic range is outdated (hence not attractive to model lovers)".

I couldnt disagree more. I love the old stuff, and Im pretty sure part of GWs problem is that a substantial number of older gamers that started playing/painting in the good years of the 80s and 90s still love the old school stuff. Hence they do all their shopping on Ebay and dont pay any attention to any current goings on at GW.

I mean Im sure the quality of the fine detail is great in the newer stuff. But the designs are often not so good. And different people see different things. When some might see the latest 40K minis as excellent quality castings with better detail than ever before, someone else (like myself) might see a boxy design with less anatomically correct features on human bodies, guns that are silly huge, swords that are so thick youd imagine them weighing half a ton, etc. In fact in my opinion the Rouge trader era stuff is still superior to everything thats followed it. That goes for Jes Goodwins Epic titans too just to give you one example. But its very much a matter of taste, and this is of course my very personal opinion...

Absolutely. It's a slim hope! But maybe when things improve...
