When I was younger I assumed it was because working in lead you weren't able to catch the same level of fine detail as plastic, so made them bigger to compensate.  But then I saw the prototype Epic infantry which were metal and out went that theory.

Then I thought scale was always very flexible in Epic (30 Marines inside the original Thunderhawk - never happening), so they weren't really models of Daemons, just Daemon-shaped counters to represent Daemons.

I've just picked up a load of old Lesser Daemons and the question's resurfaced.  Any Epic historians out there with the answer?

Good question. I have no answer, but am vaguely curious too.

Poor quality control I reckon. Epic epitomised with 2nd ed the new design philosophy of simple moulds for less wear and tear and more money. And they were awful. Later on Epic40k came out and the moulds improved but were largely left to one man who often struggled to fit everything onto stuff like rhino hulls. The Infantry got steadily bigger from the initial releases (track the mk6's to mk7's, orks to ork and guardians to guardians) with the pinacle being reached with tyranids (different bloody model range). Maybe again for reducing the number of bad casts?

I guess when I'm immensely rich I will buy Epic, then get everything resized. Either at 5-1 for vehicles and scale infantry to that, or match everything to GHQ scale (which is the other thing I'm buying when I'm immensely rich).

Now to rob some central banks.

The raly Eldar Avatar was almost Wh40k human-sized. Then in E40k it got the right size compared to other models. Now it is again a 28mm monster.

But then again we have the larger Greater Daemons and Avatars from FW, so they must just be the larger sort. I like the SM Era Avatar, one of the best epic sculpts IMO.

Even the FW Greater Daemons and Avatars wouldn't justify a 28mm model in Epic
But IF FW would make them as big as a Warhound Titan then it would be justified

The current Epic Avatar is only 22mm to eye level*. That's 20% shorter than (and about half the volume of) a plastic Space Marine, which is 28mm to eye level*.

The FW Avatar is 118mm tall, according to FW's website. That makes it roughly four times the height of a regular infantryman. The current Epic Avatar, meanwhile is 30mm to the top of its headdress, making it five times the height of a 6mm-tall Guardian. That makes it about 25% too big; slightly less in practice since it has a slightly taller headdress than the FW Avatar which exaggerates the size difference. For comparison, that's about the same amount as Epic Chaos Space Marines tower over their Imperial counterparts.

I can't comment on either of the SM-era Avatars or the E40k one, though, as I don't have any handy to measure. I seem to remember the second-generation one was a bit huge.

*Not including base.

I have the original SM1 Vintage Metal Deamons ... and these were used for both SM1 & SM2. Epic40K brought out the newer plastic that are still used for E:A ... I've been "Epicing" since '90.  G/W has no reason for their various Epic scales ... They just do what they like ... 2 sizes for SM Infantry, 3 for Eldar Guardians, 2 for Ork Boyz, etc., etc. ... they just do what they want ... really ... No logic or reason ... :upside:

If I had enough $$$ to buy 51% of G/W ... I'd go to the Bunny Ranch outside of Vegas ... :vD 8v)

Yeah, but you would probably only be able to afford going twice.
