More marine lists?
When Chaos, Tau and Squat aren't on a stable diet?

It sound as if there's a need of a "doctrine" system.
That way you can (auto)generate your own list/s and be fairly certain it's playable (ie balanced).

thanks Hojyn.

Have been using the 2008 handbook without issues, but my regular opponent wants to organise tournaments here in Oz and most people use the compendium, so we've changed to that.

So many different variations on the same theme though. I do echo Erik M's comments that, whatever the situation with GW and God Jervis, EpicA does need a single rules set and army list, even if only for the more "core" armies. All the different rules, stats, points and the deeply deeply entrenched views of their various proponents really don't serve to further EpicA as a gaming system.

Personally, I don't give a monkeys about what becomes the main rulebook (minor adjustments I think are moot - they don't win or lose you games) as long as we have one. And given the strong disinterest from GW, deferring to them seems somewhat pointless.

All IMHO of course :)

As a non-Epic player I must concur to that point:

The Epic rules, armies, FAQS, handbooks, NetEpic, NetEA, etc is pretty muddy for an outsider. All these variant things are no strongholds to lure in new players.

I think someone should make a post/pdf about all these things on what they are, what they want etc.

Having started not too long ago (maybe a year) I remember that initially it wasn't too difficult to get into it. I basically grabbed the official rulebook files and then the FAQ after I'd digested the rulebook. From that point on it was just a matter of hunting down which lists I wanted be it AMTL or eldar, or just using the official ones. That said it's nice to have everything in one place to access rather than having to hunt down the files one at a time.

The problem mainly arises if you want to gain an understanding of the game as a whole and the lists that are currently accepted. Which mainly arises for pick up games or organising tournaments. I'm thinking about trying to get something happening with this at the moment and about the only good idea for which lists to allow is to just say "all of them" and retain a veto power of some sort for the really out there lists.

I'm in NE melbourne, suburb called Macleod, though we're heading off to the States at the end of the month. GROOV3R's the guy you want to talk to, though he's up in SYdney, poor thing :)

Yay! Part Two! Thanks Hojyn!

Now for the critiques:

Typos:
P 4:
"6.5 Eldars" should be "6.5 Eldar"
"6.6.4 Chaos Army Lists" should be "6.6.3 Chaos Army Lists"
"6.10 Dark Eldars" should be "6.10 Dark Eldar"

P 86:
"6.5 Eldars" should be "6.5 Eldar"

P 110:
"6.6.4" should be "6.6.3"
"6.6.4.1" should be "6.6.3.1"

P 111:
"6.6.4.2" should be "6.6.3.2"

P 128:
"6.10 Dark Eldars" should be "6.10 Dark Eldar"
"9.10.1.4 Support Craft" should be "6.10.1.4 Support Craft"

Also, again I think the rules changes/FAQ additions should be highlighted in blue. That way it is easier to point out to someone who might be using an older set of the rules. I went ahead and did it on my own copy, but for future versions, it would be nice.

Now, not to beat up on you after the hard work, but the colors in the army lists are, umm, not good... some are distracting, some won't print well in B&W (or color for that matter - Minervan, LatD.) I would prefer a standard across the board - grey and white, black and white, whatever, as long as there is a good contrast.

Finally, the landscape format. I know it probably saved a few pages to go landscape for the lists section, but it just makes things difficult. Now you have to turn the book on its side to read the relevant sections. I think things would look better if you just went into portrait mode, at least for the Army Rules and Army Lists. The Force Lists could remain landscape, as that is the way it is in the "official" rules.

Thanks again for your hard work!

Oh I forgot - maybe keep the Rules and Army sections in separate documents? Just a thought...

Thanks a lot, berzerkmonkey.  :D

I'll try and make a printer-frienly version one of these days. The "changes in blue" thing is noted, too.

As for the portrait/landscape format, well, I tried a lot of different ideas and this one is the only thing that satisfies me. I think it's a good compromise between lisibility and compactness.

@ Morgan Vening: thanks a lot for the comments too, the typos will be corrected in the next version. For some reason I can't answer your PM, though (the "Reply" button doesn't show), so that's why I'm answering here.

I like the format as it is. Portrait for text and landscape for lists.

one thing that both GROOV3R and I thought was excellent, were the FAQ footnotes. Can't describe how useful they are to have right there where you need them - certainly helped clear up some rule questions alot quicker than would have taken otherwise. Thanks again!

I am new to this game and I am starting to get frustrated trying to simply put an army together.

which list do I use?

Is this the list i should use? Or should i use the one in the book?

All I want to do is put a Space marine army together and it seems there are multiple lists. I have purposely avoided any experimental lists, fan lists etc, all i want is to use the official list.

I think it would be beneficial to seperate the lists into something like this

1 - Core lists - This is the army lists for - Space Marines, orks, Imperial guard that have been published in the official rules. These Core Army lists stay exactly as they are for a period of 1 to 2 years, changes maybe be tested in that time but no army canges will occur until the next 'update time' on 1st Jan 2011. If noone plays with land raiders because they are 25 points too much then bad luck, it may be changed in the 2010 update or the 2011 update but until then the lists are set in concrete. Call the list 'Core 2009' so any idiot knows that once the year changes there will be a new list to download, there may be no changes but at least the list will be up to date and everyone will be using the same lists.

2 - Non Core lists - Everything else. If you wish to use these lists then the onus is on you to use the most updated list, players using these lists should be more experienced players who are well versed in the game and have some information about why these lists arnt 'core'.

We need to be able to put a ruleset on the table with the stanrd core lists and hand them to someone who is interested in the game and say "hey frank, here are the rules and the standard armies, there are more lists out there but they are for advanced players"

Nothing sheets me off more than trying to learn a game when 1/2 of what you read is wrong or been updated somewhere else. Case in point was 3rd ed 40k, the rulebook was 1/2 a rulebook with a 2003 update, a 2004 update, a white dwarf close combat ruling and 15 different FAQ's.

Maybe I am missing the point of this compendium due to my newness of this game but it shouldnt be this hard for a beginning player to make a simple space marine army using the correct points values without being distracted by experimental rules.

I see the word KISS around here a fair bit, maybe some arnt keeping things as simple as they should :) or maybe I am more stupid than average :)

I apologize if I seem critical or overly antagonistic in my last post, it certainly wasnt my intention. Obviously there is alot of great (and hard) work being done around here to balance lists, create new lists, mediate between different list concepts and a whole plethora of formatting and spell checking as well.

I think I just feel frustrated that I cannot just pick up the latest rule book revision like I can with blood bowl and know where I stand (obviously Epic is a much more complicated game :) )
