Pretty much any camera from a well known camera manufacturer should yield decent results as long as it got a macro feature. Can't go wrong with Canon, Nikon, Olympus, etc.

Spud and pestle prototypes arrived today. Demonstrated to the metal men, and they said "Hm, yeah, no problem". So, the design is sound. I will begin resin molding just for the hell of it.

In a nod to Forgeworld, I have reduced the scaling on these to 5:1.

Forgeworld use a 1:5 reduction ratio from their Warhammer 40,000 models whenever they make an Epic scale model, Titans excepted.

When they make their Titan game next year, those too will become 1:5 reductions of the Warhammer 40,000 models.

There are different ways of modelling our little toys.

One way is to take the stated size of something (like per Imperial Armor) and scale it at 1:300, or 1:285, depending upon one's preference. This is fine and dandy in most cases, but how does one scale an Earthshaker? Does the IA refer to linear length, height of barrel at what inclination, etc.?

The other way is to take the model itself and scale. But what scale? I do/did 6/28 (6mm versus 28mm), or 1:4.67.

Forge World chose 1:5, probably because that's what their pantograph machine supports (I'm guessing).

So, most of my stuff has been at 1:4, then 1:4.67. I decided that taking another 5 percent shouldn't be too crazy, and that will satisfy Mister Grumpy ForgeWorld Pants.

Due to a series of bizarre misadventures with the now bankrupt Circuit City, my stepfather had an extra camera, which he is giving to me.

In return, I gave him a stock tip: Don't buy stocks.

Edit - Another case of truth being stranger than fiction, my stepfather is named Johnie B Wright, and is a retired US Naval captain. No, really.

So what scale is that? 30mm (which I think is roughly the current GW hero scale, is forgeworld a bit less?) scaled down by five which makes...?

(Edit - sorry mixed up my mm scale for models with 1:whatever - trying to think whilst niece and daughter watch Britains got talent, Gods I'm too cynical and sarcastic to be subjected to such things.)

AFAIK Forgeworld didn't/doesn't use pantography to make their Epic models, they just chose 1:5 as the ratio they would use.

I'm guessing it's because they used the 30mm of a (standing) Marine, and the 6mm of an Epic Marine, divided former with the latter and came up with 5.

This of course doesn't get away from the fact that the Warhammer 40,000 tanks are at a different scale to the infantry, but it is consistent.

It certainly makes things look a bit odd - the Leman Russ especially looks a bit to tall and narrow to me (yes I prefer a flatter wider looking tank, hence my love for the ragnorock hull married with a 'russ turret!).
