I forgot this until the recent "Obelisks" batrep, but...

Quote: (Chroma @ 26 May 2009, 13:51 )

It's only when Rallying in the End Phase that a formation without Blast markers can't return units.

Just to illustrate:

Phalanx with 4 remaining units w/ Lord + 3 BMs means they will go to 6 units + 2 BMs (2+1 for leader = 3 = +2 units, -1 BM).

4 units w/ Lord and 0 BMs means no rally.  No increase in formation size.  No choice.

The resulting formations are similar in ability in with respect to shooting and firepower needed to break but 6+2 is more durable if they later phase out (more units rallying off board) and the extra units are better for an assault formation than losing BMs, barring a completely unprepped target.  Even in the case of an unprepped opponent it's possible the extra 2 units could make a difference in outnumbering bonus/penalty that covers the BM penalty.

Plus, if the tactical situation is unusual and BMs are so uber-important that 4+0 is better, the suppressed formation has the option of choosing 4+0 and would do so.  It could even go with 5+1 if that were useful for some reason.

Even taking into account the very small possibility of a failed rally (2+ if within 30cm of the opponent), it is a net benefit for the Necron to have BMs on formations in the end phase.

The "we get tougher and more flexible when we have BMs" Necron rally rule is just wrong.

That one I knew.

I thought we were talking about some "advantage" to formations without the Necron ability rallying off-board when broken vs those *with* the Necron ability doing the same.

Perhaps directly mapping across the Void Shields rule which inspired the Necron rally rule would be appropriate.

Ie: Necrons would get just one unit back in the end phase, regardless of if they passed or failed their rally roll.

This could encourage the Necrons to use the Marshall order more than once every six months.

Nah, the Necrons aren't supposed to have anything larger than a man that 'walks', everything larger than a man is a Skimmer of one sort or another.

Yes, it's never sat well with me that a formation with no BMs can't bring anything back. I really don't see the reason for this.

That's a bit of a misleading statement, Neal.  For clarification, they don't get tougher and more flexible with BM's in a general sense.  But they do sometimes get tougher when compared to a formation that has taken losses and has no BMs.  It is a game mechanic though, and there are other strange workings in other lists and even in the general rules. What we have works fine.

After playing the Necrons a lot, I really can't say I ALWAYS remove BMs or I ALWAYS reinforce the formation.  The opportunity to decide doesn't come up as often as I would want (at least against an experienced player who will annihilate one formation as a time).  When the opportunity does arise, rare is the day I have to deliberate one way or the other.  Sometimes I want BMs and men, sometimes I want no BMs (to ensure an activation, get the +1 or +2 on the assault resolution, ensure the formation doesn't break, etc.).

Cut the legs off and put them on skimmer bodies.

at the risk of starting this conversation all over again, any reason why the other changes were not used (monolith formations, wraiths, etc)?

because nothing's seemed to be done so far with the last round of changes.

I thought you'd agreed to move the obelisk formation back?
