Personally I'd like to split out lists from rules.

Currently there are 3 combo's of rules on the web. The original books, the 2008 errata and the 2008 handbook.

After that there are lots of places were you can find army lists designed to be used for one or more of those rule sets. Even if GW were still developing and publishing lists I'd expect fans to be producing lists as GW would never get to do all the different sub lists that the fiction makes possible.

This is theoretical as I'm not actually back playing yet, but possibly Core Rules, plus 2008 Errata and NetERC recommendations, or Epic-UK compatible lists-set for tournament practice.

I'll admit to some early confusion about the differences between the two rulesets, which led to the occasional embarrassing moment when learning the game (about 6 months ago--I'm still a n00b).

My Gods! With your great articles I'd assumed you'd been playing for years and years  :D

I've said it before, but fantastic work on the articles! Keep up the good work and I'm sure you've pulled people into the game through them.

About FR tournament rules, we used to play Handbook 2008. But the leaders of the FR project missed the 2008 erratas and were convinced the Handbook was a compilation of official stuff.

So, by now, FR tournament rules are the Rules book + 2008 Errata.
Well, they also think about an additional FR set of rules, but it seems it is not the priority for now. Priority is building a complete set of army lists.

Out of vague curiosity, what was the reason for Epic-Fr doing your own lists in the first place? Was it a language issue with your playtesters not all speaking English or something?

It was partly a language issue and partly a desire to do things faster... which is somewhat ironic, since their army lists are no closer to completion than the lists here on TC. :p

It's certainly not fair to try to impose our rules on people who don't speak the language so have no input into their development.

Indeed, when I was in the early stages of developing the AMTL army list, I went to the EpicFr community for advice, not to try and force them to adopt our list.  :))

Some of the French players, who prefer your vision of the AMTL lists (including me), are allready lobbying ;)

You know, I had no idea there that many rule versions.

I've just had a look at what I've got, and it's still not clear.

It's the download (book) that was available from the GW site in January.

the data file date on it is 1/19/04 but that dosen't mean much it seems.

anyone any idea?

Umm, it is better to consider the core rules separately from the Races lists and their associated "special rules".

The original E:A rules had some flaws. Over time FAQ and errata were developed to correct these flaws and they were all put into a single set of proposals for GW. These proposals got incorporated into the "Handbook", but when Jervis Johnson finally returned them the proposals had been significantly reduced to the 2008 Errata and 2008 FAQ. The rejected suggestions were almost entirely related to the various races rather than the core rule system. So as others have pointed out, there are essentially two "core" rulesets:-
  • The original E:A rules + the official 2008 Errata and FAQ (available on the Specialist games site). The site also has various 'official' army lists.
  • The "Handbook" that tried to incorporate all the FAQ, Errata and official army lists in a single document. This includes additional material rejected by JJ in his review.
While there are some differences in the Races and army lists used by various countries or gaming circles, these are minor. Although these differences may alter the look and feel of Races, they all still operate under the core rules.

Note, although there are moves to provide further clarifications and a revised 'single source', these are still under discussion and development. Obviously they may be used as required, but they are also likely to change over time.
