The story is.....

The boards initially began showing a few errors, mostly database connection issues at peak times.

The web hosts noticed that we were using too many resources and impacting on other sites on the server. The first thing that I know about this is that they suspend the entire site.

I send a polite but firm email to state that when the site is suspended, I dont have local admin access and cant actually do anything about this.

The site is returned, and I switch off the boards as a gesture of good faith, and a defence against a further suspension of the site.

Now, the web hosts have pointed to the main TacCom boards as the culprit here. They state that the boards are using too many server resources, and that it must be an issue with the way that the board code is written.

The forum developers web site have no idea why this should be an issue. We run the latest version of the board software, 'out of the box' with no modifications by me. No other used of the forum software appears to have any similar issues.

My plan at this point is to go back to the web hosts and propose that we return the boards online, but using a different skin (theme, colour scheme) as this is the only real thing about the boards that is different from all other instances of the software out there.

If the problem remains with a different board skin, I will be forced to look at switching to a different software package for the boards, and that means converting the data.

Interesting. The skin seems unlikely to be the source of the problems as far I could possibly see, is it not simply the sheer number of users/posts etc that it causing the excessive bandwidth?

That would be odd as well. TacCom didn't exceed 2000 members, so still quite small. The wiki pages visits weren't huge as well.

Hi guys. The problems were not largely due to the number of visitors, but the fact that the code has problems. I am attempting to find where these code problems are. Since other users of the same board system dont appear to have the problems, and the only thing different about this system from the others are the colour schemes, this is what I am looking at right now.

If people do continue to get the 'max_connections' error, please do let me know awap.

Hey guys, nice to see the boards up and running, thanks for all the effort!

BTW I tried loggin in to the wiki boards, but it doesnt work. Do I need another set of username/password for those boards or can I use the same as for this one?

The skin shouldn't be causing the issues since it doesn't rely so much on images. Post attachments also shouldn't account to too much bandwidth since they are capped at 150kb given the size of the community though I believe the forum allows you to link directly to the attachments from other sites so people linking to images hosted here could help things along. Thanks for bringing the site back at least for a bit though!
