Fair enough.  I'll tinker with some ideas for the goodies I mentioned and then email them to you.  I think I still have your email address... :oo:

Should I move this thread the the 6mm modelling forum for it to get more exposure?

I'd rather wait until there's an actual modeled part. For the time being, it's just fan art.

Maybe Monday will be my lucky day.

Well, the part arrived on my doorstep yesterday. I was worried that the details wouldn't be there, but the opposite was more of the case. The barrel looks longer on the printed part than it does on the screen. I don't know if that's because of some distortion during printing or maybe an optical illusion due to the part being clear vs. the solid part on the screen. The 'under-bar' of the gun looks too thin, as does the cable from the bar to the receiver.

Being my first 3D print, I made some mistakes that I will have to correct in my next attempt. I need to study the part a bit more, and figure out some practical minimum size limits for certain details. I'm thinking that any protruding part is going to have to be a minimum of 0.04" accross its smallest dimension. However, detail on a broad surface can be smaller. Based on the results, I will have to go back through all the other stuff I have worked on, and revise some details. The end result will be things will be a bit bulkier than a straight to-scale conversion. However, that's probably a good thing, since that will end up matching the style of the rest of the epic model line.

I've poured the first half of the mold. I am doubtful that the underbar and fins will cast properly, but we'll see. I can always scratch build those. I figure that fact will limit any outside interest in the part.

Here is a render of the part I had printed, it's a full sprue rather than a single gun, and at least that part of my experiment is a success. The legs on the sprue allowed me to pour the bottom half of the mold directly into the mold box (no need to use a temporary clay base.

Hey, why isn't this in the 6mm modelling topic? I almost never come to this part of the board.

Great work on the piece! I'm very pleased that you're doing Eldar parts, simply because I don't like to do them, but feel they deserve love anyway.

The printing of a sprue seems interesting, and I should explore that a little more.

What print service are you using? You mentioned Memphis, is it AcuCast?

Hey, why isn't this in the 6mm modelling topic? I almost never come to this part of the board.

Well, I didn't want to spread the word around too much, before the part was made real. Once I get the thing cast, I'll take lots of pics and show it off.

The printing of a sprue seems interesting, and I should explore that a little more.

I got the idea to make a sprue because that's the point I always got stuck on when trying to cast my scratch built items. I figured if I put them on a sprue, then I could minimize accidental undercuts and get more uniform casts on repeated parts. I plan on printing everything to a sprue (it'll help big with the jetbike wings and banners). I added the tapered legs so that I could keep the sprue level and just pour the molding rubber directly into the mold box, up to the centerline of the parts.

What print service are you using? You mentioned Memphis, is it AcuCast?
I used Printapart, as they were the cheapest and fastest. I only mentioned Memphis because everything FedEx goes through there. I swear I get some things faster by regular FedEx than I do from FedEx 2nd day.

I have to say, based on my experiences with this project, I can easily imagine a day when all table top miniatures will be made on these machines. If these things every make it into a home at a reasonable price point ($500-$1000), GW and every other miniature company will be finished. Later, once color can be added, then the hobby will explode in popularity and painters will be a rarity.

Ah, takes me back to high school.

But seriously, it was blue. I dunno about waxy, i didn't handle it. It went straight from the shipping box into the molding box.

Just when I thought I was done buying Epic Eldar...

well, not that I'm against selling it, but lets see how the first cast turns out. I have a feeling it will be to flimzy, but I could be wrong.

In any event, the top half of the mold has been poured, so maybe by this time tomorrow, I'll have at least one sprue cast.

Of course, I may have to wait until saturday, what with the finale of BSG being on and all. I suspect they're gonna Kamikaze the ship into the cylon colony, but that's just my guess.

Yup, I agree that's what they're going to do.

The Oracle prophesied, et cetera.

However, I think very good painters (Marike, Onyx, etc.) will always be in demand. Time will tell, of course.

Well, no news is bad news...

I'm going to try one more time (I have a plan), but my weekend casting session did not produce good results. The first problem was when I was separating the mold and the printed sprue broke. Luckily, the part survived, so if it comes to it, I can cast them straight (without my cheat sprue). Another problem is that the resin took the path of least resistance (the sprue), and did not fill up the part space. I'll block this part off and see if I can get the resin to flow in the direction that I want. I give it a 50% chance.

If that doesn't work, I'm gonna wait a month (when I have some more spendin' money) and try to print a better arrangement. I have to fix a few things with the part anyway (the cabling is way too small, and some of the gaps are deeper than necessary). We'll see what happens.
