Well, this is my very first of a pair of Warhounds painted by myself. The other Warhounds I have were either painted by a friend (since flitted to America) or painted by persons unknown on eBay.

I've never really bothered with basing my stuff but would perhaps like to try for this. Any suggestions?..

I like the basing.

But how can you tell it's a boy? The blue? I see no dongle.

Dongle?.. You're thinking of my Slaanesh stuff. No dongle, is blue.  :))

I have no static grass only flock. I tried painting my bases for Necrons using grey but it looked blue. How would you guys base your own stuff.

I wouldn' use flock at all. I'd sand the rest of the base. Heavily water down some scorched earth. Let it dry completely to seal it (usually you don't have to do this if you sand your base before you prime your model).

Apply an even coat of scorched earth. Drybrush Graveyard Earth. Drybrush either khaki or Bleached Bone to taste.

Paint the rim either graveyard or scorched earth (would have never thought of scorched earth as a good color for rims, but I think it was Silentbob who uses it to an impressive effect.

To break up the sometimes brown monotony try lightly drybrushing (just a dusting) of some codex gray to give a hint of urban area. Do this in patchy areas almost as if you were adding irregular static grass patterns.

Thanks guys,

Rastamann, you're spot on. I've been using the Citadel washes ever since the guys here showed me how to use them. They give good results even for an amateur like me. I was torn between trying a dappled grey wolf like effect and the AMTL blue of many Titan Legions.

Thanks for coming to the rescue Malakai. I'll try your technique and hopefully I'll have something to show soon. I've been a bit busy with job interviews and filling out applications and work etc so I've been a bit quite on TacComm lately and I don't see that changing any time soon but I'll try completing this for next weekend... hopefully.

L4, a pleasure as always to view your stuff. That skeletal construct's eyes are major creepy. It's an awesome effect... consider it stored in my "cool things to copy" file. Are those Warhounds with pincers?.. where did you get the claws from?.. they look very feral and cool.

Good stuff Warhead.
Really like the washes and the Plasma Blast Gun green effect.

I often don't paint bases (especially on infantry - see the Iron Warrior Thread). Here I use appropriate colour sand/fine ballast.

When I do, I do a slightly simpler version of Malakai's technique.
Couple of different varieties of sand/talus glued using PVA.
Basecoat the ground with Graveyard Earth.
Drybrush with Bleached Bone.
Wash with Woodland Scenics Raw Umber (or a similar diluted acrylic paint).
Add a couple of splodges (love that word) of Burnt Umber to break it up a bit.

Done.

Gives you something like this.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Cheers,
Steve.

Thanks Onyx,

The charging Plasma Coil effect is something I've seen from many others here but most notably from one of the BFG entries from one of last years painting competitions (See beautiful and amazing picture below - Not mine, CanuksFan I think.)... it wasn't until recently that I discovered the effect had been achieved by using LED's... oops. I don't think I'm ready for that kind of work.

I have only used citadel paints. I've a ton of the old paint to get through and want to get my monies worth.  :)) I know woodland scenic and other types are highly rated by yourself and the other painters on site. When I re-stock that'll be the direction I plan to take.

That is a nice effect on the base and one hell of a cool Ordinatus Majorus?.. It's hard to get used to EA terms for an ol' NetEpic player.

So far I have based both Warhounds with sand and coated the base sand with another dose of PVA/water. The few bases I have done have seemed to stay fixed with this combo. When it dries I intend to paint it with the scorched earth. I have other terrain pieces that I would like to try this on too in an attempt to get it all to look like it belongs together...

Hmmm, it appears to be a faster technique than I thought. I've still to finish the models and have some tidying up work to do on both but as to the bases, how did I do?

I took it outside for better light.

I threw some Citadel Gryphonne Sepia Wash on the base as I thought I had gone too light with the drybrush. These are the most fussed over miniatures that I think I have ever done.

Really, let me know what you think. I know the gold is a bit sloppy but my eyes just don't see it on the models were as the camera picks up on everything. All in all I feel quite pleased for a first time.

Looks good to me ! "Who Let the Dawgs Out ?! "  "Woff, Woff !!" :D And I just bought some of that Sepia Ink !  Can't wait to try it !  And I know what you mean about the camera ... I especially saw it when I took pics of my LotD ... You see too much detail the naked eye wouldn't see on the models ... let alone on the game board !  :)
