Don't you reckon you should use the tourny standings for the first round? :)

Surely if everybody plays as expected then the last round will theoretically match the overall standings

Well the 2008 EPIC tournament season is over; the final blast markers have been placed, the final macro weapons shot and the final assault won (or lost depending on your point of view). Armies are heading back into their dark cases to be stored away for the winter ... but do not despair, the 2009 EPIC tournament season will soon start!

But what a finish to the season it was; this weekend was the Dragon Slayer EPIC GT. Only 12 hardened veterans could make it to this 2 dayer tournament in Mansfield. However the quality of gaming was immense. A big congratulations to all our winners:

Judges best painted: Matt Arnold Imperial Guard (Tim Hunt got a box of mince Pie's for being second; Lost and the damned)
Players best painted: Damian Bradley Imperial Guard
Most Sporting: Andrew Harris

Woodern Spoon: Greg Chambers White Scars
3rd Place: Steve Gulick Black Legion
2nd Place: Chris Hayes Orks
1st Place: David Thomas White Scars

There was also the winner of the 2008 Championship to sort out; congratulations goes to David Thomas (David won a box of 6 deep filled Sommerfield mince pies ... some from London forgot the trophy!)

Well-done and thank you to all that entered and helped make the GT run very smoothly.

The final standings were:

1 David Thomas
2 Chris Hayes
3 Steven Gulwick
4 Tim Hunt
5 Mark Williams
6 Matt Arnold
7 Damian Bradley
8 Joe Jephson
9 Andy Harris
10 Mark Hargrave
11 Gavin McKenzie
12 Greg Chambers

White Scars took both top and bottom?  That's hilarious!

How'd the Cultist Army of Doom do?  I see it's in fourth...

What armies were played by the other competitors?

With regard to the Whitescars, it shows the difference between a player at their first tournament (having only played 3 or 4 games before) and the overall winner of the UK tournament championship.

The sea of cultists did better than they should have, final results were 3 wins and 2 losses.

Of this 2 of the wins were fortunate when the blitz was left unguarded in the first game vs marines and then vs orks a mistake was made landing a Landa in the orks half not mine to prevent a 2-0 victory. My luck deserted me in the final game facing an Ork army with a Great Gargant which started off killing large numbers of troups and then remembered it was a GG and stopped that. I suffered from 4 or 5  failed activations in the first turn and never got my forces back into the game after that. I also got a little bit fixated with a big gun mob with two soopaguns that held the centre of the battlefield and their supporting flakwagons.

Whilst the speeding hoard was a frightening army to face I found that it suffered from having a maximum ranged attack of 30cm for the ground units except the Hydras and having to rely on my aircraft to hit distant targets. Large War Engines were avoided at all costs and 17 FF attacks is only good if you can roll alot of 6's. Also with all the activations I was trying to achieve and only having 1 supreme commander I was guarenteed to fail a couple a turn, which really hurt and allowed for piecemeal advances again leaving my formations exposed to counter attacks. The tactics that worked the best against this army was coming out to meet it an not allowing the cultists to box the army in, those that did this, Air Assaulting Marine and garrisonned Orks prevailed, note the other Orks almost succeeded this way to, but I got lucky with the engagement.

Next time I think that I will drop a lot of the vehicles and a few covens and add in some more fun stuff.

My games

Game 1 Mark H Black Legion
His second tourney. Can't remember much bar the gargant getting attacked but not killed. I either lost or lost a draw I think. I clearly remember the fearless stuf not wanting to die. Zaps never hit all game.
Lost this I think, but can't the score.

Game 2 Mark W Eldar
Again Zero zap hits. Still the Warlock Titan took 1 double, 1 assault and 2 sustains to finally kill the gargant :) However whilst this drama unfolded the skorchas wiped out a formation of aspects in waveserpents, a formation of guardians in waveserpents, the void spinner and took the blitz. The strategy was to rarely hit, but make all the saves and roll lots for assault resolution.
2-1 to me.

Game 3 Gavin marines
Gavins luck was simply beyond bad. Nothing activated on a 2+, nothing could hit and so on.
Crushing victory to me. Note the same two armies had a practice a couple of days previously and Gavin with average luck crushed the Orks.

Game 4 Dave White scars 10th company training mission
His famous (I suspect used as an excuse by us all) luck wasn't that much in evidence. The Orks managed a turn 1 initiative win to jump fom the open into some ruins on his side of the table and proved very resilant subsequently. The rest of the game they held on, seeing all their fast stuff killed as teh Orks were steadily out activated and subsequently shot up by warhounds and similar creatures. The early loss of his thunderbolts to 2 flakwagons perhaps made Dave a bit timid with his considerable airforce and I think resulted in the
Winning draw (more than 150vps difference just).

Game 5 Tim Cultist horde
Well, sheer brillance on my part :) Or maybe it was all those failed activation rolls?
Tims major mistake was sitting both of the objective on my table half on top of a hill 30cm appart. The Gargant decided not to lead the charge this game and instead secured the hill, making take and hold a nightmare proposition. Otherwise the Orks got into hard cover everywhere and bar the airforce didn't have to worry too much about the shooting.
I beleive this was a win for me, maybe 2-0.

For an army consisting off what I could find painted I did 13 places better than I expected, though actually had a bit of consistent luck this tournament (barring the 5 or 6 in total hits the 4 zaps made in 5 games), replacing my normal early game bad luck and late game good luck (and you wonder why I like siegers). In retrospect I would have added a buggy to the skorchers to give them longer range for the flamer shots and the gargant could have a CC arm as it got into CC most games. Though in all honesty I would find the rest of the painted stuff and make quite a different army!

Yeah, thanks Chris.
Everyone remembers my good rolls but no one ever remembers my double 1s.
In the game against Andy H. I twice rolled a 1,although one of those didn't count as I'd dropped the dice on the floor by mistake  :vD .

My Games using White Scars,

My plan was to take out all the small formations and flak of my opponents and use the empty T/hawk to recycle the assault marines turn after turn.Ignoring if possible big War Engines and difficult to kill formations (Leman Russ Companies etc)until I had to deal with them.

I knew through test games I was unlikely to get any big wins(4-0/5-0 etc.)but also I wasn't going to lose any games by that amount either.

1) v. Andy H. (Imperial Guard)
Game mainly went to plan taking out his smaller formations and Warhounds but Andy never allowed me the chance to get at his BTS (Leman Russ Co.).
2-0 in turn 3 (26-6).

2) v.Steve G. (Black Legion)
I've played against Steve's BL list at home games and in tournaments many times and they are usually close games.Steve knew my plans but he must have had too many good dice rolls in his previous game and had below average against me which made the difference.
2-0 in turn 4 (23-9).

3) v. Tim H. (lost and the Damned)
With no small formations(except fliers) to go after I concentrated on flak removal then went after the  SC formation (having played a quite a few games with and against L+D I knew how much this would hurt them) and then after the BTS.
2-1 in turn 3 (23-9).

4) v. Chris H. (Orks)
I stuck to my plan and Chris did to his but my dice rolls were very poor (probably not as bad as I remembered them but worse than usual   ).The game could have been won on the last activation when again poor FF attacks from a LC meant I was only on +1 for combat resolution and then rolled double 1.That would have been harsh on Chris though to lose at that stage.
T/B in turn 4 (14-18).

5) v. Damian B. (Imperial Guard)
Attempted to stick to plan but Damian had too good AA/overwatch coverage to go after formations I needed to get rid of early so had to slightly switch plans at the start of the game but went back to it on turn 2 when the game opened up a little. In this game Damian saw why some players have a dig at my dice rolling,I air assaulted a Warhound with T/Hawk and 7 assault Marines (2 Chaplains) which it survived with 1 DC remaining for me to then roll a critical and the Warhound to stagger of the table and out of the game.
2-0 in turn 3 (26-6).

A very fun weekend topped of by winning Deep Filled Mince Pies  :agree:

Some things never change :p

We should make up a piece of card with "Ooo, that was unlucky, Gavin!" and just hold it up for the whole game.
