When organizing GothiComp 2008 and acquiring the prizes for winners the following post had been made:

Awesome! Hmmm... Would it be possible to set up a paypal prize pot that we could all just contribute to throughout the course of the year and then let the organizers split between the three prizes? I'm sure if we all donate a few bucks here and there there would be enough combined wealth for all three to have prizes. If we could raise about $102 we could get 3 BB and an escort squadron to split between each of the subsets or if less came in maybe a BB, cruiser, and an escort squadron.

Now acquiring prizes can be hard as you hope on the genorosity of other people. But would creating a 'prize-pot' as described above be viable?

Lets see some bullet points:

* Would people actually be willing to donate money?
* Would only people who donated be allowed to enter competitions or would it be a pot out of generosity?
* What is done with excess money?
* If applied a set value for donations or up to member.
* Other ideas? (Advertisments on this site like Warseer has for example)

So...?

Prizes for what is my first thought.
I'm no modeller, so I am out of any present and former competion.
These are battle games first and foremost.

I could see myself running the Alfakta campaign and have prizes there (most companies has already said ok to support it).
That would be in line of the basic part of this hobby.

Other things that could be here is things like scenarios, painting, modelling, novels, battle reports(!) etc. But fighting should be prime.

Ah, these prizes are especially for the painting competitions EpiComp and GothiComp.

I can throw 20€. It is probably just 10% of my monthly miniature allowance, so for the Hobby!

As a non-competitor (who is nonetheless willing to contribute), why do people compete? Is it just for the prize, or for the company?

I think what I was opening up for a discussion on.

That slinky wet one above could enter "experimentally homemade model", I could enter "most awkward rule question".
I would however never enter a painting competition. But that seem to be the only ones available. And is there 5% that really can enter there?

I want a broader spectrum!

Recognition that you are a good painter or modeler, to win, and for me mainly to just ensure there is a larger gallery of nicely painted models available for other who might be interested in the hobby to look through for inspiration.

Money and pu**y. No seriously, as far as I'm concerned just to show the miniatures to more people. I don't have plans to use very complex painting techniques ever, so I'll probably never win.

Same here.
And that way, you can get lots of advises or inspiration.

I think the paypal pot is a good idea.
Thus getting a prize related to the competition you've won is in my a opinion better than money. But money can be used to buy prizes :D So the original post is a good idea. And maybe there should be a epicomp and a gothicomp pot (or other pots if there is other competition).
