I just thought I'd chip in to say that I too love BSG.

Pretty much nothing on TV beats the moment the Galactica teleported into the atmosphere above New Caprica, fell 10,000 feet (Launching Viper aircraft all the while) and then teleported out again half a second before it hit the ground... the BANG-WHOOSH of air rushing back in again as the Galactica teleports a second time, scattering dust and sand everwhere, really sells the moment.

That was pretty spectacular, and the following scene of the Vipers blowing the guard tower and gate (ala Mosquito Squadron) was perhaps some of the cleanest CGI in the show ever.  However, I have to say while my uncritical observer was enjoying the spectacle my tactical brain was crying foul, FOUL!

They decide to send one Battlestar back to rescue the bulk of humanity, but leave one behind to guard the last pitiful remnants of the fleet that escaped.  Ok, I guess I can buy that....but with a choice of a top of the line Battlestar and a clapped out relic they send the later?  Then later Galactica is surrounded, pounded to bits and on the verge of total destruction and Adama goes...oh well, nice serving with you.  No talk of launching "the Nukes"....WTF?  Then the Pegasus drops in and with what, a 15 second salvo splats a Base Ship....but between them the Battlestars can't fight off the other 3?

Was still a pretty exciting episode

Adama Snr. reckoned it'd be a one-way trip with only a small chance of going right, and he'd rather risk the less powerful ship in the risky raid than the more powerful Pegasus (Which could better-protect the small civilian fleet in their journey onwards).

Then later Galactica is surrounded, pounded to bits and on the verge of total destruction and Adama goes...oh well, nice serving with you.  No talk of launching "the Nukes"....WTF?

Perhaps the tactical situation precluded that possibility... ie: What if you opened the nuke tubes only to have a Cylon missile target the newly-revealed nuke and cause a catastrophic internal detonation within the Galactica?

Then the Pegasus drops in and with what, a 15 second salvo splats a Base Ship....but between them the Battlestars can't fight off the other 3?

The base star was caught off-guard, with its vulnerable core open to attack from the Pegasus.

They couldn't fight off the other three base stars because the Pegasus was firing on automatic, it had only a skeleton crew aboard and could pretty much just fire in a straight line ahead, and ram stuff.  :))           Meanwhile Galactica had been pwned and struggled just to FTL out of there, let alone fight.

That's my silly thoughts anyway.

Well now the Sci-fi Channel shows ST/Enterprise and SG-1 everday during the week. I'm also a big Eureka fan as well as SG-Atl., both sci-fi channel productions. And Sci-fi just started a new show - "The Santuary" with my Fav former SG-1 USAF Spec Ops trooper LTC Sam Carter ie. Amanda Tapping.   And I'm watching Ghost Hunters on Sci-fi right now (and will probably sleep with the light tonight ... again !  :ghost: ) Since the History Channel rarely shows any real "military" history any more, the Sci-fi Channel is my place.  Unless I really want to get scared then I turn on CNN ...     :_(

I love the new BSG and a fan of all the SG series, ST also.  I just don't care much for their other productions however.  I'd love to see Firefly return to production too!

We (my wife and I) are working our way through season one of Prison Break now. She says that she likes it, but I suspect that this is more about the lead actor.  :glare:  It is OK, but there is no eye-candy for me!

Space: Above and Beyond is something that I never got into. It has some great reviews, and some not so great. Wasnt this also cancelled after a single season? Is it recommended?

Heh, the reason we started watching Prison Break was because my wife had control of the remote control (as always), turned on the tv and Prison Break episode one just started with Wenthworth Miller on screen and she didn’t touch remote control for another hour . So I know what you mean Cybershadow! Ha. Though I think the doctor is eye-candy as you call it. Good written season apart from actors and actresses.

Space: Above and Beyond
Highly Recommended. Lots of Space and Ground battles. Written by original X-Files scenario writers.

I loved S:AAB, and the pegasus should have jumped out as well, madness! With those jump drives a fixed defence with be nigh impossible by three capitol ships!

Much to my chagrin I've not managed to see a single episode of the re-vamped BSG having spent my youth soaking up the original   I guess I've got it all to look forward to, I'll have to get hold of the earlier revamped series

SA&A was a good show, it did only last one season and I'm not sure if all the episodes were aired or not.  The Firefly boxed set does hold some extra un-aired episodes.  But again, SA&A is a single box set and is affordable so make sure to pick it up.

Nothing like a Hammerhead getting sucked into a black hole while playing Johnny Cash "Ring of Fire".

I like Space Above and Beyond a lot too. I liked a lot of the ground combat scenes. Pretty well done. I highly recommend it.           I think the Sci-fi Channel should show SA&B, all the Star Treks from Kirk to Archer. Plus SG-1, SG-A, BSG, Eureka and Firfly reruns an hour each daily ! :alien: :ace: I'd never leave the house !! :)  I'm such a geek !

Space Above and Beyond was on Channel 4 in Britain yeeears ago IIRC. I thought it was great. The ending was fantastic! Aargh, run it's the Chigs!

I've recently been watching re-runs of Red Dwarf on YouTube. Smeggin' excellent!

Yup, I got to agree with that.  :)

Still, I wish Firefly/Serenity was still on the go.  :sigh:

I'm okay with this, so long as it doesn't end up with flying motorcycles over Los Angeles... *shudder*

I used to think it was cool... but I was seven at the time and didn't know better.

In a way I am glad that I got into Firefly late so I already knew it had been cancelled before I started watching. Otherwise would have been so annoyed. I still watch the re-runs on Sci-fi even though I have the DVD set on my shelf. Last week they had on Mrs Reynolds which is one of my favourites.

I loved the characters- Joss Whedon does well rounded multi-dimensional characters with few sterotypes that some sci-fi shows descend to. The setting is unusual- cowboys in space- but really grows on you. I like the way they depicted both the cold clinical rich core planets and the rustic grimy poor periphery.

Would have loved a second series- the format suiys Joss' storytelling more than movies. I would have liked to see a second serenity movie as the next best thing, but I fear even that prospect has dwindled.

That surprises me. For me, Razor is almost unique in that it is a 'spin off' which actually doesnt suck. I am looking at you - Babylon 5: Crusade!

I kind of do also wish that Firefly was still with us, but I have this feeling that any seasons two and three would have just been disappointing.

Maybe, instead of getting BSG season 4, I should just watch the previous seasons again...

I cant necessarily see the drop in quality of BSG, but I do see a change in tone that some people may not like as much.

I agree that Razor was good. I dont think of it is a spin off- just a couple of bonus episodes giving us more detail on the escape of the Pegasus not to mention young Adama (who was brilliantly casted). After watching it flet that understood Helena Cain a bit better, especially her loathing for and treatment of Six (note I said understand not agree). For a cameo character I thought Kendra Shaw came off well- cool that they allowed actress to use her native Kiwi accent- added more depth to the multi-cultural world of Galatica.

I thought the second half of season 3 dipped from the amazing high levels of the first two & half seasons. I am not expecting Season 4 to surpass the earlier seasons- I know gamers can be hard to please but the consensus is nt good. I am definitely going to hold off on buying season 4 until I can buy the closing episodes. I agree that it is misleading for them to sell the closing series and omit to tell you that last half is missing!! Thanks for heads up.

I diagree with you on Crusade. It wasnt as good as the groundbreaking 5 season arc of B5. But if you look back at B5 it peaked in seasons 2,3 & 4. And Crusade was just starting to build during first season. If season one had been completed we would have learnt more about Earth Alliance clandestine research into Shadowtech. Would have been interesting to have Earth growing into role as main bad guys.

Cheers

James

Hi L4.

I agree 100%. As far as I am concerned that is what the sci-fi channel should be showing- sci-fi!!!! It is a bit of shame when it seems you can get more sci-fi shows on Virgin than Sci-fi UK channel.

Virgin One's reruns of TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise kept me going through early part of summer when out of work and had to watch more daytime TV.

I watched the intial few series of Stargate when first released but have now lost track. So nwould need to watch them from beginning again. Would be cool if channel was to show them all from beginning with one per day.

Eureka is a series that has passed me by, as did SA&B.

I wonder what the next big thing in sci-fi series will be, the one that we reminisce about in 5-10 years time?

Cheers

James
