You guys know me. I am a warm, fluffy person who doesnt get annoyed easily. But is anyone else as irritated by the BSG4 DVD release as me?

For those not following, season four is the last season of this excellent show. The dvd was due for release yesterday (in the UK). I wanted it to complete my set - I have everything else. However, season four also got hit by the writers strike earlier. So, ten episodes were shown, with the rest arriving at the beginning of next year.

So, what did the dvd release team do? Did they stop the release to wait for the entire season? No. They have released 'season four' as normal. So, people not keeping up will now pay over the odds for a 'boxed set' with only half the episodes. On top of this, there is nothing on the box itself to say that this is an incomplete series... at all... even on the back of the box. And, they added 'Razor' to make up the dvd count to hide this fact. Of course, I have Razor already, and while good it has been out for a while now. And, there is even a 'season 1-4 boxed set' that you can buy, which also doesnt have the last few episodes on it.

This really does verge on intentionally misleading, trying to get extra money out of people after the strike. I mean, I am fairly sure that the 'entire season four' boxed set will be with us, and what are the odds on a 'make up' boxed set with only the extra last episodes? I doubt it!

Argh! Am I over-reacting here?

Oh great that's my birthday present ruined then. I now have to wait until the end of the month to receive the incomplete series....

Might get the wife to send it back, get the money back and wait for the whole lot to come out.

All US series suffered from that. Happened to my favourite tv serie at the moment (Heroes) as well.

Alas, I do not but DVD boxes....

I would recommend waiting then. Plus it had gone downhill a fair bit (was that in season 3 or 4, can't remember).

Thanks for the heads up CS. Immense annoyance and resulting agro averted.

Despite the corporate money grubbing hordes of dobber screwing with the box set release does anyone have anything to say about season 4? Worth it or not?

Should we discuss in general terms, or provide more commentary with spoilers?

Having only seen the first half, I can say that Season 4 is just as good as the other seasons.  The creators have mentioned several times that they intend to END the story.  That means all bets are off.  Characters may die, ships may explode, answers will be given, etc.

With that said, they have still left a heck of a lot of questions unanswered going into the second half of season 4.

CS, I'd be annoyed as well. That is not a very good way to do business, although a similar thing happened with season 2 and 2.5.  If you look at the season 2 box it doesn't say anything about it being half a season.

Well, the ending was certainly unexpected. I found the drama level to be a little too high for my liking, but that's purely subjective.

It depends which country you are in - as I understand it. In the US, they got Season 2.0 and Season 2.5. Here in the UK, we just got a combined Season 2.

It is true that Heroes was also affected (and boy, season two was really nowhere near as good as season one!). However, season two is season two, even if shorter. Season three has just started and a boxed set will be released for that, too. With BSG, this is supposed to be the final season, and the four seasion boxed set is the 'complete show'... except that it isnt. Heroes are not trying to fool people. Season two may be expensive for a half sized season, and may be cheaper. BSG are selling this as the 'final season' and no-where does it say that the second half of season four will soon be released.

EDIT: It appears that the second half of season four will be released as season five over here in the UK. So, do I get season four now, with Razor that I already have, or wait and hope for a combined season four and five boxed set early next year...?

I'm in the UK... But I'm sure I've seen v 2.5 on the shelves at one point. Fortunately due to a weird quirk of fate I still have v2 in the cellophane and can (if need be) take it back to HMV and ram it up the managers nose.

The two half seasons are US format. So, if the dvds play on your dvd player, it is UK and the full season two. It should have over twenty episodes.

However, the split season two is supposed to have a load of cool extra features.

Aagh! Tolstoy!.. er, I mean I understand. Just something we do round here, sorry.

Not too bothered with extras as I can probably see them on line without problem at some point.

as always thanks for the info.

If they're releasing the remaining episodes of the final season in their own box-set, I can almost accept the release of the 'Season 4 (though not really , as it's only the first half)' set; the thing that annoys me most though is that I already bought Razor, and they've decided to include it in this set.  Yeah, thanks for that...  :glare:

Anyway, regarding the supposed dip in quality, well Season 2 was as good a tv series as you're going to get, it was a tough act to follow; I felt the resolution of the end of season 2 in the first few episodes of the next season were a little disappointing (I think they could've made so much more of the situation).  Also, after the immense action of Series 2, series 3 feels a bit bereft in comparison.  This is tha fault not of the shows makers, but of the channel: apparently the writers only wanted a 13 episode season, but the channel directors demanded 24...

Having said that, there are superb moments of drama in the third season, I don't think that any other series allows as much space for the characters develop (even most 'real world' based ones), and the finale is, well, gob-smacking's not the word!

If you watch series 4 (or, what we've seen so far  :;): ) expecting a space-ship battle every 5 minutes, then you're going to be crushed.  I thought it was brilliant, as it seems to have become this prolonged meditation on mortality and death...

This, to me, just cements that BSG is just the best tv series for looking at just about every political, religious, social, philosophical and ethical issue of modern times, far more effectively than any other TV series this decade.
