I must say its a bit crap. Been reading through it and well, I am underwealmed. It reads less like a tale of galactic domination and betrayal and more like a TV film.

What are others opinions of it?

Ummmm.... what background?

The new rulebook?
The Horus Heresy novels?
The 40k novels?
The artbooks?

Mostly the novels (horus heresy ones mainly), haven't seen any artbooks or similar.

Rather than go realistic they have gone smaller as it were. Anyone reading military history would write in grander stuff (hell the Chinese civil war in the 30's - a great wargames setting incidentally due to the style and units involved - killed 50 million people alone, stalingrad seems a more exciting battle than the siege of terra and so forth).

There also seems to be a desire to explain references and stuff. A star wars analogy is boba fett. A main character gets handed over to some random bountry hunter. Having references to stuff going on outside the core narrative always gives a feeling of grandur, whereas most of the stuff described, from the politics to the battles just seems small scale.

I've always multiplied all numbers used for the casualties and armies by 100.

Sci-fi wargames always want armies of 100,000 men to subdue a planet. Blockading from orbit can be done with that many men, but if you wan actual control of what's on the ground you need a whole lot more than that.

40k is particularly bad about this, pretty much any battle over a single city in WW2 is more grand than fighting over a star system in 40k.

I feel like a parrot now, but will anyhow...

Instead of looking at the non-sensical Empire why not look at the very (too?) realistic BT. There one can believe in planets being inhabited by a mere "handful".

Like the dragon-series over at Pern. Not really many making up a viable habitat.

40k, on the other hand, is always "epic" and numbers already high should be upped by x10?

Yeah, it's pretty flavorless compared to what used to be.  No more mention of keeping the Emperor alive by sacrificing a thousand psykers a day, no more test-bed slaves... *sigh*

Of course, the numbers were always a bit off.  There was only ever about one Space Marine per Imperial world.  Not exactly good odds, that.

Yes...1 Space Marine per imperial word....which is odd because it said in the past the Imperium consists of a million worlds. But the new rulebook says there are 3238 x 10^4 (= 32,380,000) Hive Worlds in the Imperium which are over 32 million worlds of this type alone.

That's meant to be 32k.

No, 3.238 x 10^4 == 32380 Hive Worlds in the Imperium.

You missed the decimal point.

No, I don't know why you'd render it like that either...

Well in my german copy it says 3238 x 10^4 not 3.238 x 10^4.
