Assuming that this is going to go 'raiders' style and possibly get printed, what are you going to do for the fluff part?

If you don't want as large a supplement as Raiders could the fluff be kept low? There is a lot of Heresy fluff out there and I'm not sure a big story in the supplement is necessary? Smaller flavor pieces from individual view points would be cool.

Similarly the modelling section shouldn't need to be as extensive as Raiders as far fewer scratch builds will be required.

It may start off as small, but these things take on a life of their own.  My recommendation is to stick some fiction in there, even if it is 10 pages long.  Even though it is fan made, people still want to feel like they got something cool out of the supplement that they wouldn't normally get from simply downloading an army list.

Small fiction
X number of army lists and unit descriptions
Backgrounds
Artwork
Scenarios (this would be the BIG section IMHO in a Horus Heresy supplement)
Modeling
Painting (something that was missing from Raiders, by the way)

It will add up, trust me.

There won't need to be that many unit descriptions if you think about it. Three of the lists (Loyalist, White Scars, Traitor Legions) will be mostly made up of standard marine infantry and armour, so that will save some space at least...

Unit descriptions isnt that hard to bring together.  The killer will be getting pictures for the OOP minis....

I would think you would want to put the datafaxes in for ease of reference.  That's what I did with the Minervan list for Raiders and it is vastly easier to use over previous iterations.  Flipping back and forth between books or papers is annoying in game play.  Besides, it will look better.  8v)

So is Jok3r taking the lead on this one or is it yet to be determined?

I can help on getting some artwork.  I've developed a good relationship with a couple dozen 40K artists and there is no doubt the vast majority of them would like more exposure.

Im Happy to take the lead- Its about time I did something around here  :p   and id really like the chance to get my teeth stuck into a project

But be warned- I have 6 weeks to go on my thesis so there wont be that much work done before then (and yes, I really should be doing more today  ); If anyone else really wants to take the lead then that's OK by me too

I would intend to largely follow what Moscovian did with raiders as that was one damn fine supplement we all agree.

Which ones? OK, the Horus Heresy artwork has (mostly) Epic:40K style Space Marine armour, but I've seen plenty of SM armies with these in. Including mine :))

Superheavies can use current Baneblades and Shadowswords. OK, Jetbikes should be included, but no need for OOP versions... converting the old plastic bikes works well (I've done it for my 1k Sons) and it looks more like the Jetbikes in the artwork anyway.

Well yes. What I meant was that a 'Space Marine Legions' sections would effectively contain almost all the troops for 3 of the armies, so there would only be 2 armies worth of datafexes in (Marines and Death Guard).

RS, I understand where you are coming from but I think you'll want to throw it ALL in.  There really is no need to keep it small unless it is pushing 200 pages or something obscene like that.

Jok3r, I think you should do it definitely and I think we can wait 6 weeks.  I am actually looking forward to seeing the maps done!  Those maps will be perfect for starting the project IMO as they give a visual for building off everything else.  The map you did of Scarab really helped me visualize where things were, helped the story organize in a realistic way, and was critical in getting the scenarios done.

You are definitely the man for this job.

Hey, thanks for the kind words mate :) Glad the maps were useful.

Ill let things lie here for a few days, and if no-one has any objections ill start getting some bits and pieces together by the weekend.

Objective 1- to get some draft lists done.

I have Marine Jetbikes, I can paint them to what ever theme necessary. And LOTS of heresy themed Dark Angels (too bad they kinda overslept the whole massacre).

What was that BIG Thunderhawk predecessor that Horus was using? That definedly needs stats.

Stormbird.

It's supposed to be about the size of a Landing Craft, but only carries infantry.

The design has significantly changed since then IIRC.

I think 'Stormbirds' themselves were a creation of the Horus Heresy novels, not sure they actually existed in the background before then, although there were other Space Marine landing craft.

As for appearance, there are various details that can be determined from the HH novels but no pictures so far:
- They are larger and more 'sleek' than Thunderhawks, but still described as 'fat bodied' and 'heavy-duty'. They have a more streamlined and conical nose compared to the blocky nose of the Thunderhawk.
- They are often described as looking somewhat similar to birds of prey, so judging by this I would have thought their wings are much larger in proportion rather than the relatively small wings on a Thunderhawk. The wings are described as folding inwards while landing as well.
- They have heavy engines mounted under the wings, along with racks of missiles.
- There are several different variants in service (the Luna Wolves, for example, use the 'Warhawk VI' pattern).
- They have 'underwing cannons', as well as cannons mounted underneath the cockpit, and 'rotary cannons in forward pintle mounts'.
- They are able to carry at least 50 marines, probably more given the fact they are substantially larger than the Thunderhawk.

Although there's no images of the Strombird, there's a bunch of people doing animation mods for the PC game 'Dawn of War'. And they've come up with a basic shape for a Stormbird. I quite like it!

Reaver
