Moscovian - I am against mass-mailing people as a general rule.

This wouldn't be a general rule (1.0).  It would be a very special rule (consider it 2.0 material).    How often do you take the entire site down and change it's address?  I'm just thinking there are some pretty low tech people out there who barely know how to turn on their computer and find this site. If they see it is down for a week or two they may just assume it is down for good.

The side effect is you would reach out to people who haven't been on the site for awhile and probably bring back some folks who just haven't been in the forums for awhile.  One mass mailing every 3-4 years isn't excessive by any stretch.

Just my take on it.

Is the big blank area above for anything? Currently it uses up valuable screen real estate and you scroll that bit more.

Otherwise I would see nothing wrong with a we have moved email.

Any idea why people's .sigs are displaying even when I have this option disabled in my profile?

Avatars are not showing but all the .sigs are as well.

BTW, Quick Reply appears not to work.

OK guys. Thanks again for your posts.

I have now sent a brief mass-mail to all members. we will see what effects this has.

The blank header area is set aside for the title graphic, which will be the first thing to put right when I get a couple of minutes.

I am not sure about the issue with sigs showing when they should not. I will investigate. As for avatars, I am seeing these fine on my account...  ???

Quick reply is a problem right now, and I have made it a priority. I will try a few things with the next backup period on Monday, while the boards are down.

Thanks guys.

Pictures seem okay to me (Gothicomp reference). Avatars are fine too.

I'll check the speed.....

Title headers...

Comercially used for advertising, brand awareness etc, but here thats in the address bar and is it really needed for a hobby forum? Certainly I would apprieciate more screen more viewing messages from the get go. Maybe it could be at the bottom of the page?

PG says it better than me further down :)

Thanks CS
Apart from the quick reply aspect and some text colours I've found no problems.

I seem to have a different problem with pictures. Larger images that are posted, that displayed fine on the old boards, now have part of the right hand side of the image cropped off. If I reight click 'view image' I can see the whole thing, but only part of it actually shows in the thread. I would imagine this is due to the fact that the left margin with avatars etc now seems to take up almost 1/3 of the width of the screen. I'm using Firefox, but have the same problem in I.E...

The blank header area is set aside for the title graphic, which will be the first thing to put right when I get a couple of minutes.

Can you make it smaller than the previous title graphic?

When I open a page in my browser I have 585 pixels of vertical space. You currently have 244 (or so) pixels of space reserved for the title graphic. 40% of the usage page when I open a topic is just for the title.

All the other UI cruft takes up 473 (or so) pixels. 80%. So when I open a topic there is only 20% of the screen that shows topic info.

I would like to suggest that the title graphic be kept to an absolute minimum

In the boards I run I use a very similar theme and the branding is 55-60 pixels high. Or about a tenth of the space you have devoted to a title now.

versus

Both shots were taken in different tabs of the same browser window. You can read the entire first post in my sample but in the Taccomms sample you can only read the first line or two of the post.

The posts are what we are here for not the title graphics :-) So please resize that title area (even now while there is no graphic) and let the text be the focus and not the graphics

I haven't received a mail either. I also agree with Pixelgeek on the top space. Could be smaller.

Actually. I have not had any emails from these boards. Has anyone?

PG, thanks for the info on branding. I will certainly look at this and try to bring this to a minimum... if it is required at all.
