And now for another update of this infinitely prolonged thread...

Claw mold has performed 2 consecutive good casts. It seems fragile. Hopefully it can hold out.

Performed test pour of the mitten mold last night, but the girlfriend came over, so I never cracked the mold open to see what happened.

The claw tine mold is proving to be very erratic. Sometimes I get 2 consecutive good casts, sometimes none. I did manage enough casts to satisfy the deal that Illuvitar and I had worked out.

Looks like another mitten mold is in the future.

That's OK, brother. I have nothing to blame but my own pride, thinking I could pull off those claws.

First half of second mitten mold poured.

Tonight I'll weigh the molds and figure out how much silicon has gone into this project.

14 ounces. About 2.5 of that was from wasted molds. This is an average amount of waste for most of my projects.

The molds have begun growing brittle and sticky. Either that, or my Ease-Release needs replacing.

An inevitable consequence of casting Chaos stuff...

Just you wait until the whispering voices start!

Seriously, though - I have had this problem when casting with very small amounts of resin. Generally it's because the mix is not exactly right, slightly too much of one of the components. It doesn't generally matter with larger pours, but with the small stuff a tiny mismatch in the quantities of the resin components can cause all sorts of weird effects.
Have the parts cured and released okay?

Regards,
Reaver

The exact timeline was this:
Pour afternoon Sunday
Remove early Tuesday
Resin pieces were solid, but wanted to stay stuck to the molds. When that happens, the danger is a little bit of silicon might come away with the cast piece, damaging or ruining the mold (but you know this already).

The pour size was 7.5ml of each component. Although I do have a lot of experience with this size of pour, you're right - sometimes the ratio can go off and weird things happen.

I was also using the last of a can of Ease Release.

I'll do another pour during lunch today. Hopefully the new can of ER and/or more accurate mix will help the situation.

Do you normally leave it in that long?
I find when I leave things in longer than half an hour I start to get problems with moulds tearing.

Another trick which I've used is to post-cure the moulds before use. After they're first made, remove the master, and put them in the oven for 4 hours at 60 to 80 degrees C. It helps with mould life.

Of course, your rubber might be different to mine - maybe check with the manufacturer first.

Reaver

No, not normally. Usually just an hour's cure time.
