I'm certainly interested in the idea of Epic rules suppliments, rather than just new lists. Something like Epic Cityfight could be very interesting, with rules for destroying buildings etc, and special scenarios based on controling city blocks etc.

4) Rules Supplements (I think the only thing here is expanded WE rules/ATIII)

I think this a great idea, especially for AT III. I don't know how feasible it is for E:A, but I'd really like to see detailed damage tables like AT.

I've been playtesting an ATIII system in private for the past couple of months ; PM me for details.

Although campaign books and rules supplements would be great, I think that the major races should first be covered in proper army books like Raiders.

'Nids, Black Legion, Lost and Damned and Tau.

Those are the immediate priorities. Not trying to pressure anyone working on them, just my opinion.

All four of these, as well as an Imperial PDF were in development eight years ago when we were in playtest with EA. It would be frustrating to leave these undone.

I'd definately be interested in seeing those [Warband] rules!

They're in draft form with tables for Orks and Chaos warbands.

The tables should come up with warbands in the 1200-1800 point range with 4-6 formations most of the time with most ending up right around 1500 points and 5 formations.  Formations range from 200-500 points but most are in the 275-325 range.  The Warlord's retinues are usually in the 375-400 range.

To give an idea, I rolled up an Ork warband as an example for the rules.  It came out as...

  • Bad Moon Warband (Warlord) - Warlord (Nob w/ IC and MW on FF attacks), 3 nobz, 6 Boyz, 3 Grotz, 5 Battlewagonz
  • Evil Sunz Speed Freek Warband - 1 Nob and 4 boyz in trukks, 4 Skorchas
  • 10 Madboyz
  • 11 Deth Skull Big Gunz
  • 13 Deth Skull Big Gunz
    (estimated ~1450 points)

The basic experience system is done.  I plan to put in the "Minigeddon" rules and several scenarios linked into a Warband campaign.  I'd also like to add a casualty system if feasible and use the EA Experience system I came up with several years ago.

In addition to Orks and Chaos, I figure Inquisitors would make a good Imperial Warband, then maybe Dark Eldar or Eldar Pirates or something.  Once the other stuff's in place it's just a matter of making up tables.

  • Neal's system might be just the thing for gaunt's ghosts or other colorful units that don't quite fit in EA.

Additionally, At that scale of battle you could run a short scripted campaign in a night. Looking forward to seeing more.

Mills Press is the company that I chose for all of us to work with. ?Well, you don't HAVE to print with them but your cost would be higher since we've almost paid off the membership fee, even with the shipping to the UK. ?$397 of the total costs of Raiders is the membership for 5 years and that was worked into the pricing of 100 books printed.

If we were to order 251+ copies the price would drop considerably. ?In the case of Raiders it would have meant more than $2 per book discount as I recall. ?The more expensive the book, the larger the price break will be in raw dollars. ?

The layout for Raiders is set up in such a way that the book is 1/2 inch wider than the other supplements. ?That isn't bad IMO and it beat re-formatting the whole darned thing (keep in mind printing Raiders wasn't on my mind until it was almost finished). ?I will check with them this week though to see if the books can be printed at the size of the existing books. ?Then again having the pdfs done in such a manner as to maximize printing on your home computer should probably be a priority as well. ?I dunno. ?Something to mull over.

The covers should definitely come in at 300dpi. ?Pictures on the inside of the book will obviously look better the higher the quality. ?With that said, many pictures in Raiders were taken with lousy digital cameras and they came out just fine. ?Some are a little blurry as evidenced in the pdf but most cut the mustard.

    Software
Oddly enough the software that Mills Press recommended right off the bat was Microsoft Word. ?The vast majority of their customers use it and it worked just fine. ?Most of Raiders was done in Word but part of it was done in Open Office (the scenario section) but after working with both extensively I won't be going back to Open Office for any major undertakings. ?It is unwieldy at times and the functions are difficult to find.

InDesign is a program I'm trying to get a hold of. ?Coming in at $650 I refuse to pay retail; I had an opportunity to buy a copy on Ebay for $200+ but I got sniped. :( ?A buddy of mine offered to hook me up but I really can't stomach pirating software so I declined. ?Anyone looking to put together something like this can do it in Word with some effort. ?If I get a hold of InDesign (or Quark) for a reasonable amount I can volunteer to do layouts for people. ?If you happen to be on Ebay looking for Epic stuff, let's all keep an eye out for these programs and perhaps we can work together instead of bidding against each other. ?It would be nice to be able to use it.

    EDIT

The other thing I was thinking is some of the Rules Supplements or Campaign ideas could fit into a supplement.  I see no reason why Chroma's Red Queen couldn't go into whatever Tyranid supplement is produced.

I wish i had Quark. My Word is gone for good and OpenOffice is strange in some aspects.
But both Word and Open Office have the same formating qurks: If i want to move a  graphic only 1mm it moves 5mm and makes amess of the other formating.
I move one item but then several others are moved in erratic ways too :(

Try anchoring the image to the page instead of the paragraph in OO. It's a lot easier to deal with images that way.

I put them in the background by default and layer other graphics and text over them.
At least i did this in Word. Haven't worked out how i can do this in Open Office yet.

Do you use percentages or absolutes?

Mills mentioned Quark as another option and I checked out the demo software.  Both InDesign and Quark will work well (better than Word and Open Office) but between the two InDesign seems to be more geared toward the needs of an Epic supplement.  There is some open source software out there that does much of what these two do but feedback is that it is buggy and I am hesitant to load it.

Believe me - Adobe InDesign is far far superior to Quark XPress. I should know, I have to use the both of them every day!  :)

Seriously Mosc - if you have any questions regarding the two or any other  PDF or print-related queries then don't hesitate to ask. It is my profession afterall!  :;):
