CNN online is reporting the following:

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.

He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.

Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.

Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.

"It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from over the years about how he helped them become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them," Gygax said. "He really enjoyed that."

Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's still growing in popularity.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Besides his wife, Gygax is survived by six children

RIP Gary.

I vividly remember my first D&D experience when I was 14. A friend basically had to drag me in to watch a D&D session that was being held at our local hobby store. I already had wargaming experience courtesy of Avalon Hill, but I had no idea what a RPG was and I wasn't sure I would like it. Little did I know on that summer back in '76 that I would still be playing D&D to this day.

Thank you, Gary, for the countless hours of fun you provided.

I don't play anymore, but used to spend countless hours either playing or dreaming up ideas to use in play.  D&D, through a relatively convoluted path, eventually led to my wargaming addiction.  A sad day indeed.

Hi!

Wow DS!

You've been playing D&D longer than I have! (Since 1980).

Ironic that he passes away on DM day.

That is too bad, Temple of Elemental Evil... Scourge of the Slave Lords... Against the Giants... Realms of Horror... all classic series brought to life by the father of the role-playing game.

Well, I believe I'm a few years older than you.  :D

Yes, it is ironic that he died on DM day.

Directly or indirectly he has had an influence on all gaming , not just RPG and thus all us wargamers.

Like Sgt Crunch I got into wargames via D&D.  Thanks Gary, you have made millions happy and contributed to literally billions of hours of fun.

Who could hope for a better epitaph?

Sad news indeed - Basic D&D (and the AD&D) brought a group of us together back in the early 80's that form the core of the gaming group I still play with today!!

RIP Gary.

White Plume Mountain - still the best module ever.  But what male HASN'T at least played Keep on the Borderlands.  Even if you never got into D&D, more adventurers went through that keep than anyplace else in gaming history.  You'd think that they'd run out of kobolds. :p

Gary Gygax - you were a very creative man and the world is a little dimmer without you.

My first exposure to D&D was a newspaper article my mom showed me around '78 when I was 10. the article was talking about that 'crazy new game' the college kids were playing. The only picture showed the various polyhedral dice and the cover of a module festooned with mushrooms. I was instantly entranced.

Heh.  The first comment on the board my college friends frequent was "I guess he failed his save."
