Hmm - It would be really good to get some form of official answer on this.

Reading the Planetfall section carefully, it does effectively say: take one unit . . .  units being transported are disembarked once the 'transport has arrived . . . . . and carry on until all the planetfalling units have landed. Finally, in the Drop Pod notes (which are recognised as being poorly worded), it says that the Deathwind occurs after the pod arrives, but before the troops disembark - - -

The combined sense of the two sections is where I got the "sequential planetfalling" mechanism from.

Having said that, I see what you mean, though I suspect that both mechanisms could end up with similar results. The question being how close the 'sacrificial' formation is to those behind, and whether you have any Trygons or other fast attackers with sufficient reach to cover the distance when you retain.

I would place all the pods first, then resolve deathwind attacks.

If you do it sequentially, and happen to break a formation, the enemy won't know where the other drop locations are when they withdraw.  That could get extremely nasty and reduce the game to a lucky guess.

They must attack the same target.  If you can intermingle the enemy, that's considered one target (they are treated as a single formation for the duration of the assault).  There's no way to assault 2 separate, non-intermingled targets in a single action.

Neal, I thought that it was possible to draw non intermingled formations into an assault.  If your charging formation assaults a single target formation, your units are required to move toward the closest enemy unit, regardless of whether they belong to the target formation or not.  While only one formation was targeted for assault, a second (or third) could potentially be drawn in.

Do I have this back asswards?

Only countercharges are required to move towards the nearest enemy.  An assaulting formation might be able to draw in a non-intermingled formation in the case of a tie in the first round - both sides would then have an opportunity to countercharge before the next round - but that's the only way I can think of.

Ahhh...  I guess I did have it wrong then.

Move along, there's nothing to see here...

That's another good point, I didn't think of that.  I suppose that possibility already exists from orbital bombardment before planetfall, no sense it allowing for it with sequential drops.
