Well with Emperor's Shadow around at mine again I thought it might be time to share one of our games with the rest of the community.

Pictures can been reviewed below (Will need to use a different camera next time)

All rules used were GW published, ie Rulebook, Swordwind & updated skimmer rules - nothing else.

I played Eldar for a change -

Eldar Guardian Warhost - Wraithguard & Wraithlords (Held back in Webway)

Eldar Guardian Warhost - Hvy Wea Platforms (3) Note started playing with 3 too many guardian stands which I rectified by removing later on in the game.

ES was playing IG -

Infantry Company + Hydra

Baneblade
Warhound
Warhound

Objectives were evenly spaced close to the centre line with the two in the IG half being closer to the sides of the table. Wraithgate was placed forward. Sentinals & Rangers both garrisonned, Spacecraft was set for first turn with Barrage set to hit to the left of the IG Blitz over the set up Infantry Company.

No Teleports & Strategy to IG.

With IG winning the SR ES decided to use his Manticores and rain death on my closely packed Eldar behind one of the few pieces of terraine on my side of the table. Passing the activation roll, falcons, guardians & 2 EoV are covered by the barrage templates.

In a fit of poor rolling only 2 Guardians are killed with BMs being placed on the other formations.

With presumably a heavy heart ES passed the initiative over and my VRaider streaked across the board to target the treat of the Vultures, 4 hits - 3 saves & 2 BM left me grumbling, but happy that the treat had been stopped for the time being.

Passing the initiative back over ES marched his Infantry Company that had been under my Orbital Barrage forward into the cover of some ruins outside of ht e OB, but closer to the Wraithgate.

The Eldar rangers went onto overwatch, whilst the Rough Riders marched up the IG left flank behind the cover of the hill. The Guardians in the wood Marshalled - failed and removed BM clearing all of them off the formation. The sentinals attempted to go onto Overwatch and failed again removing BM.

With no suitable targets nearby and close to breaking, the first Stormserpent marshalled, remaining behind the wood and removed all BM.

ES then marched his second Infantry Company up to the left IG objective supporting the Roughriders and placed the Banblade on the right flank on overwatch.

With nothing for them to do and to try and bring the Shadowswords into a position where I could attack them the Revenants doubled, shot the Sentinals killing two (breaking them) and retreated back behind a second hill.

With a target no inview the right flank Warhound doubled forward to fire on the Revenants - 2 MW & 1 normal hit - 1 wound 2 BM.

The second Stormserpent then also successfully marshalled removing all BM and staying still.

With no other targets Warhound 2 bounded forwardon an advance and fired on the Rangers hitting once but the cover of the ruins saving them and only placing a BM on the formation.

Not expecting to do anything I activated the Wraithship to discover that the second template touched two Shadowswords. Both shots hit, wounded & the commissars SSword blew up from a critical.

Unsurprisingly ES marshalled his Shadowswords moving them forward a bit and removed all the BM.

I was feeling quite good abot things at this stage so decided to activate one of my formations in the webway and engage the Inf Company that was in the ruins infront of the Wraithgate. The guard scored 3 hits & 1 dead Wraithlord whilst the eldar scored 8 hits and 5 dead guard stands. The Guardians won by 3 breaking the guardsmen and taking the set of ruins that they were in from them.

In the final activation of the turn the stormtroopers doubled upto the Guardians that had just won the combat and preceeded to shoot everything that had at them. With the double and cover 7+ was the order of the day for most of the shots and only resulted in 4 hits killing 2 Guardian Stands.

Rallying -
Eldar Revenants yes / Guardians no
Guard Vultures & Inf Comp failed and remained broken. Sentinals rallied.

Turn 2 - SR Imp Guard

Avatar teleported near forward Guardians

IG - Warhound 1 sustained fire at the Revenants knocking off the two points required to destroy the nearest one and breaking the second one.

Warhound 2 retains and sustains on the Avatar, 4 hits no saves one dead demi-god....

Quite understandably the Eldar were a bit shocked to see their god taken down in a hail of Megabolter rounds, so to perk themselves up the forward Guardians sustained fire on the Stormtroopers killing 2 troopers and a Valkyrie. Before they had a chance to react further the Vampire Raider retained and air assaulted the Stormtroopers intermingling them with the remnants of the infantry company in the ruins with supporting fire from the Guardians in the ruins.

When the dust settled all that was left of the plucky Guardsmen were the Commissars Valkyrie and the infantry company commander with commissar, whilst the eldar had lost one stand and the Vampire Raider.

Things calmed down for a bit as the unbroken infantry company on the left flank advanced forward and fired on the falcons placing a BM. The guardians in the woods advanced to get a better view out of the woods and the remaining Shadowswords attempted to double, failed and just moved forward with a BM.

The Rangers doubled to try and finish off the lone infantry company commissar, but the ruins provided ample cover for him. The sentinals then tried to double forward, but failed their roll and broke.

The falcons then advanced and fired on Warhound 2 removing both its shields and placing a BM on it. The roughriders then attempted to march and failed deciding to remove the BM.

The Guardians in the centre of the table advanced towards the shadowswords first firing on the lone Valkyrie doing nothing and then leaving the cover of the ruins. The Baneblade then doubled forward to fire on the Guardians from the aircraft killing 1 and placing 2 BM.

The 2nd Stormserpent then doubled up to the Shadowswords and placed a BM on them. The Manticores held to prevent themselves getting any BM.

The Webway on the Stormserpent then opened and the final Guardian formation with the Wraithguard engaged the Shadowswords with the support of the Rangers and the remnants of the Guardian Warhost with the Wraithlords and Guards. Eldar won by 5 wiping out the Shadowswords and securing the BTS goal for the Eldar.

End of Turn

All Eldar rallied, IG Vultures, Sentinals & Warhound failed to rally.

Turn 3 - SR Eldar - No teleports

The Guardians with Wraithguard doubled up to Warhound 2, scored 1 wound breaking the scout titan. Attempting to retain the falcons were going to double up to the  Manticores to prevent them from firing, but they failed their activation test and just removed BM instead.

Having been reprieved the Manticores opened up on the exposed Guardians with WL & WG. Using WG RA saves only 1 guardian was killed for a total of 3 BM (Disrupt!!! I think that we forgot this).

Warhound 1 then advanced on the last Revenant hidding behind a hill and caused 1 wound (2BM). Then to our mistake the IG retained for a second time with the Baneblade sustain firing at the guardians + WL & WG. We noticed this as I was writing up what had just happened, but as the baneblade only killed 1 guardian I was happy to let this go. The Guardians then attempted to engage the Valkyrie & Inf Com commissars in an intermingled engagement only to fail, break and run back into the cover of the ruins.

The Roughriders on the left flank then proceeded to march to get into position to engage the blitz guardians in the next turn. Stormserpent 1 advanced to fire on the single Valkyrie and placed a BM on it breaking it again. The commissar next to him then attempted to march and failed breaking himself.

The last Revenant picked itself up and sustained fire on the Warhound scoring a magnificent 5 hits taking down the annoying little titan.

The infantry company on the Eldar left then sustained on the Falcons killing 3 and breaking them.

The Guardians in the woods then attempted to double, move-shoot at Roughriders-move back into cover, but failed and removed BM instead.

The Rangers sustained at the Commissar's lone stand finally killing him and the remaining guardians doubled towards the IG blitz.

Sentinals, Vultures & Warhound all failed to rally for IG.
Falcons & Guardians + WL & WG failed for Eldar

Turn 4 SR - Eldar
No Teleports.

Guardians in woods, by Blitz go onto Overwatch, Guardians at other end of table engage Manticores for IG Blitz and in 2 rounds of combat kill all the Manticores but get 2 BM, they then retreat to the IG Blitz. Attempting to retain for a 2nd time the stormserpent fails, takes a BM and shoots at the Valkyrie to break it again.

The Baneblade turns around and advances back to its Blitz killing 1 Guardian and breaking the rest. The Eldar rangers attempt to advance, fail, take a BM and move anyway.

On the Eldar left the IG Infantry company doubles forward and shoots at the Guardians in the wood placing 1BM on them. Retaining and going for the Blitz the Roughriders engage the Guardians, only to fail the activation roll and sit around removing their BM.

This just leaves the Eldar to finish off the turn. The Revenant doubled across the table to shoot at the previously untouched Infantry Company killing 1 stand, the guardians + WG also doubled across too place a BM on the Infantry Company.

Thus ending the game, neither side had enough Goals to win and we didn't roll the same to push for another turn. The game went down to VP which the Eldar won 2075 - 1337.5.

I think that if a couple of things had gone ES's way - first Manticore shots, OB not taking out Commissars Shadowsword & Stormtroopers killing something - the game would have been very different.

Oh and thanks to Chroma for his game log sheets - very useful.

Now to improve my photography and get some more games in.

Just as a teaser, ES & I had a quick 3k game Eldar vs AMTL play test after this game. I can't post a report on this as we picked up our pace as time was limited. I used the same list as above whilst ES had 3 Reavers, 2 single Warhounds, Hydras, Sentinals, Skitarii + Chimeras & Tarantulas.

The game revolved around me knocking activations off ES whilst he punched forward. All three Reavers were 650pts and a potential BTS so when ES marched one into the middle of my half of the table everything went for it. The Reaver managed to survive to the start of turn 2 when my Avatar crashed into it taking the last point of damage off it. (It shouldn't have happened as retaining I rolled a very slightly cocked 1 and ES allowed me to re-roll it)

I managed to show why Revenants are seen as so tough in Swordwind by sustaining and getting 11 hits on a Warhound (Should have shot at the Reaver behind it).

The game finished on turn 3 with and Eldar win 3-0 (BTS, Blitz & TaH)

ES was using TRC - Legio Victorum for his army sellection and in our opion this produces a solid army to use which is not overly complicated to play with or against.

We heard about this game on Sunday, it sounded like a good game and it reads like one too! I've never played eldar, they look to be a challenge to command and to play against.

The Wraithguard sound tough, some endurance in what would otherwise be very fragile formations.

I need to echo praise for the battle report game logs, they make things much easier.

Thanks for the report Tim.

Unchanged Eldar are brutal in my experience, but Guard have perhaps the best chance if they have lots of infantry and arty :) Orks (Esp speed freak style) can do very well too if they rush like crazy and haven't taken too many slow units.  Poor old Marines tend to be dogmeat though.

Unchanged Revenants - put every gun to them! And on no account be in sustain fire range  :D

Never seen someone actually use a wraithship!

I find that I fail Holofield saves quite regularly and so only rarely get to use the Revenants to their full potential and most of the time it's doubling and then missing with half my shots.

I've started to use a Wraithship ever since TRChris mentioned that they had MW 4BP and only cost 150pts. This single shot can potentially be a big leveller against a hoard army that has to fill the deployment zone. Especially if the revised MW Barrage changes are included.

Hi Tim (not sure if you did this without taking an initiative roll but have seen others do it at tournaments)
Even if you are taking a hold as your action (not allowed in the rulebook,it lists the actions that can be chosen) you have to make an initiative roll and risk taking the BM.

I have come across this situation 3 or 4 times in the later turns at tourneys were players take hold actions instead of 1 of the actions allowed and the formation does nothing,but loses the risk of taking a BM and maybe breaking itself or having more BMs than it could shed in the end phase.

Its not a big thing in home games but at a tournament were we often see lone rough riders/falcons/gunwagons etc. contesting objectives or when added up for VPs in tie breakers (a single unbroken leman russ left from a company would only be 325 points were as if it broke and failed to rally it would be 650 points towards the total) it could be a big thing,especially towards tournament points scored through tie breaker results.

This brings up the question over formations that are on overwatch from a previous turn. Can you select the formation and chose to stay on overwatch without rolling, effectively passing your turn, or do you have to reroll to enter overwatch again?

And shouldn't you always have to roll as if you fail you can't retain either?
