Easy tigers! lay off the Artillerymen for awhile hey?!
Solid shot was indeed used a lot because it could be manufactured locally, didnt need fuses cut etc etc and when fired into close packed troops at range was devestating.
Of course in a Naval scenario, solid shot was used to damage hulls. Theer was a range of other ammunition types too (chain, link, grape etc) but the Naval ammo could be sent ashore and used in appropraiate sized guns, which alleviated supply issues to some extent
So yes it was done for cheaper SFX, but it is also accurate, especially in the Peninsula War (where at the least the first half of the Shapre Series is set) where supplies were tenuous and sporadic and gunners fired anything they could get their hands one.

Wow, great history discussion guys. Col. Shrapnell would be proud he was remembered ! And there was a Sharpe's episode with the Congreve Rockets too, of "the rockets red glare" fame from the Star Spangled Banner !

Hi!
Anyone know who invented rifling? As in the grooves in cannons to make it more accurate?

Hi!
Back on topic...
Anyone know how many books are in the "ghost" series of books?
I have read three so far and I know there's more.
The titles would be nice too.

After a quick trip thru my library, the best I can find is that late in the 15th century some Germans had discovered rifling. But as we all know it did not generally become wide spread until about the time of the ACW 1861-1865. And the rest, as they say, is history ...

Quote (Legion 4 @ 12 2003 Sep.,04:50) | Amazon cheaper than G/W !? ?Who would have thought !? | They were ?4.05 mass market paperbacks imported from America, but recently these are always out of stock so you have to go with the standard 20% ones (?4.79). Maybe GW lent on them?
