Hello all!
Well, as you can read in the title I have an idea about transforming my regular imperial cruisers to look slightly different from those you get straight from the box.
Yup, as you can guess I visited Bob DeAngelis' homepage and the gogotha spiral. Well, I already had some fluff for my fleet coming that way, but that gave a boost to the idea.
Basically I plan my fleet to be non imperial. They will come from a rogue sector, the Palman Empire. That sector has a big contruction space dock and one big forgeworld to aid them there. Their fleet is incredibly big and this is the reason why the Imperium has not tried to conquer them: they are not loyal followers of the EMperor, but the navy battles needed to conquer them would deplete Battlefleet Ultima, and even if they conquered the sector the toll weould be too high. The fleet is needed to perform other tasks. Besides, they are near the maelstrom and they tend to fight against chaos, so in fact they help the Imperium, even if in an indirect way.
Well, as you can see this sector is not an imperial one, but it is a sector with an old forgeworld-shipyard facility, that works with the same APC system than those around the Imperium, so I am using imperial rules for them. the thing is that I would like to change them a little bit to make them less imperial, though On the other hand I am not a coversion master precisely, and this is why I am asking for ideas. I would like to make some changes in the ships but so far I have not figured some easy but obvious conversions yet.
Any suggestions appreciated
Health and a lot of sixes,
Xavi

How about painting up some chaos cruisers in Imperial type colours and insignia (ie no chaos icons)- then they can be old style Imp designs , same STC template or whatever you want in your fluff. Use Imp turret types and bridges etc to make them a little different
Thats a fairly easy, minimal effort way...

Well, because I selected my fleets (marines and Imperials) because of the general looks of the army, not because of their rules Having a chaos fleet painted in imperial style colors would not exactly suit that, hmm?
It is an idea, though, and a squadron of chaos cruisers can find its way into my fleet easily. After all, chaos ships used to be imperial designs. I still prefer the more gothic feeling in the imperial ships, though, specially in some cruisers and battle cruisers.
I was thinking more along the ways of having diffent engines for them, dirrent prows (maybe sleeker ones or more pointy ones) or modifying the bridge of the imperial cruisers. Any ideas on how to make that? Thse things change the appearence of a ship, while keeping the imperial feeling in it.
Regards,
Xavi

-Parts from plastic model kits of battleships are great for converting BFG stuff imo.. bridges are really usegul, along with sensor arrays and of course gun turrets etc... a few of that sort of thing sprinkled onto your basic cruisers should really make them stand out from the crowd, and of course, you could try scratch-building your own prows like BobD to add that extra 'touch of class'..

I've just stolen little bits off various Airfix models I have lying around- the Bismark, HMS Belfast and (the WW2) HMS Ark Royal... I've made a small asteroid base and am currently working on an "experimantal ship" using some other bits...

If you want an easy way to change the look of imperial cruisers, I suggest:
1. Getting some thin plastic card and glueing it on the section where you glue weapons bays (before you put the bays on). This will bulk out the cruisers' width (works best for battlecruisers)
2. Cut off the pokey bits on the parapet running along the top of the ship (and the bottom of the ship in front) and covering the top bit it with thin plastic card (which you can then decorate with more plasticard) This makes the cruisers appear much more rugged.
3. Replace the standard wings with thick plasticard plates like a battleship or battlebarge. Cut most of the wing off, then use the stub to mount the armour plates. Paint insignia to taste.

There's a Japanese company called something like Pit Road that makes 1/700 naval accessories.
I've used them for microarmor and the like. They're great!
I haven't found a link to them yet. I know they have one, but i think they updated to a mostly Japanese language format.
I usually buy them at my local hobby shop that carries boxed plastic models. I'm sure that a model shop owner could help you find them.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Revell (I think) also make a great series of 1/1200 scale stuff. BB and CV sized stuff so its still very useful for BFG conversions.
