After years of playing W40k, I realised that I need change for a while. And Epic got my attention totally. So now I have decided to start it with Imperial guard, but advice could be necessary. First, the list. I made this 2500 points list after reading the rules, playing those training scenarios and thinking.

Regimental HQ with Fire support platoon and their Chimeras
-Supreme Commander
-12 Infantry
-4 Fire Support
-9 Chimeras
=650

Infantry Company with additional Infantry platoon and Fire support
-Commander
-18 Infantry
-4 Fire Support
=450

Artillery Company
-9 Basilisks
=650

Sentinel Squadron
-4 Sentinels
=100

Tank Company
-Vanquisher
-9 Leman Russes
=650

This should total to 2500 points, with 5 activations. No aircraft or Titans are coming, so no need for Hydras or Titan-killers. I think this has some basics that are required, the Supreme Commander makes sure things work, and stays in the back with Infantry company. They shoot things from afar and finish things with firefight if needed. Basilisks give fire support to rest of the army. Tank company advances with Sentinels and eliminates enemies together.

Do I have enough activations? Can this amount of infantry hold the objectives? Is there enough or too much artillery compared to points? Does the Tank company need more support? Can the Sentinels eliminate/suppress leftover units after the Russes? Should I consider making this list more offensive by mechanising the Infantry Company, and using them together with Regimental HQ to ram through opposition?

Now questions abut miniatures.

What does the SG Imperial guard character pack contain? I know it has 29 miniatures in total, but can someone tell me what kind of miniatures it has? Does it have any good commissars, standard bearers or specialist guardsmen? Is it really worth it's price tag?

I've been considering alternative miniatures, I plan on using Dark Realm Miniatures' Pax Arcadia range for all infantry. And Forgeworld for Chimera-based vehicles, super heavies and flyers. But where to get Russes? SG gives full 10 tanks for ?20, and FW offers 3 sponsonless conquerors/vanquishers for ?5. But any other choices? They should be similiar enough for others to recognise them as Russes, but doesn't need to be 100% identical. Something that is a tank with turret and sponsons, paintjob does the rest. And Sentinels? I havent found any light looking walkers, all seem to be too massive and heavily armed. Are there any other models that are good enough for Chimeras/Basilisks/Hydras or infantry? I also have quite good converting skills since I play W40K with Orks, so could it be a reasonable idea to convert/build my own vehicles? I could also try casting my own vehicles, but is that cost effective at all? Since mold materials and resin are not very cheap if I remember correctly. Well that's it, I have no more questions. Thanks in advance.

It has lots of different commissar designs (Including two Commissar Yarrick models!), lots of different Commander models in different poses, some guardsmen waving flags, and one Ogryn bodyguard model (I reckon he's meant to be the old special character Nork Deddog).

I reckon it's worth the cost, one pack gave me enough characters to do two IG armies.

It's definitely a labor of love.

DRM and Exodus Wars are excellent for use with Epic. I have G/W-S/G, F/W, DRM and E/W in my 6mm Forces.  All the S/G Character Packs are excellent and worth it. Good Commissars, Standard Bearers, etc. ...  And I have both S/G and F/W Russes, Chimeras, SHTs, aircraft, etc. in my forces. Both work for me.                  Molding on your own, is time consuming and can be expensive.           I've been doing Epic/6mm SF since '90. And have 99% of all Epic that they made/make. Except Knights - don't like'm.  :D

Welcome aboard, Commissar.

The army you have built is a good one for learning how to play E:A. It is possible to create an army with more activations, but then you might end up with too many formations that would break easily.

As for sources for minis, there's ebay of course. You can also try Chaos Orc. He carries new and old minis. Here's the link:

Chaos Orc

Also, as L4 mentioned, Dark Realm and Exodus Wars make excellent epic proxies.

Do I have enough activations?

Tis a solid enough force.

Many games today take place at the magic 3000 point mark. Since you could in the wider world face fliers and so on I would recommend a couple of packs of Hydra (10 pound forgeworld, cheaper maybe from other ranges), I generally use 3 attached to companies and one independent formation (and 2 thunderbolts, but thats me).

Further another cheap activation would get your activations up and most importantly leaves you with a spare 50-100 points to sort out your list which has one major flaw - Break Their Spirit! If you intend to play the scenario in the book having three formations as the most expensive gives the opponent three chances to get this goal.

Most armies have one formation (that does not contain the Supreme Commander) as the BTS goal, so if it gets mauled it pulls back. Here you would have to pull back half your army.

Can this amount of infantry hold the objectives?

Probably. At 2500 the enemies activations are limited too. Just make sure you place his all very close together so your two major spearhead formations can cover them.

You'll find you inf company is the firebase doing much of the defending, backed up by the arty. Further off objectives would probably get secured by mauled formations pulled back from the front.

Is there enough or too much artillery compared to points?

Depends on style. Certainly companies hit harder but are a big target for enemy deep strikes (anything from drop podders to teleporters to simply fast long range skimmers). If it doesn't work out field two batteries instead and spend the other 150 points on something else.

Does the Tank company need more support?

I would support it with the mechanised formation, sure it has the supreme commander but it also has numbers for assaults, excellent AP firepower and is bloody fast.

Can the Sentinels eliminate/suppress leftover units after the Russes?

Sentinels are great screens - i.e. stopping assault units getting to your russ so the latter can shoot them. With only 4 multilasers between them don't expect to much but they can shoot broken formations and cover objectives.

Should I consider making this list more offensive by mechanising the Infantry Company, and using them together with Regimental HQ to ram through opposition?

No idea, but at this points level people seem to go the mechanised route or the leman russ company route, doing both doesn't leave enough for the rest of the army.

What does the SG Imperial guard character pack contain?

Lots of stuff. If you like the look of customised command squads its for you and is a lot more fun than any other blister you can buy. If you want something specific try and swap/trade? Many people (including me) went out and bought lots.

Welcome to Epic. I think you'll find it a little more tactical and, consequently, a little more fun than 40k.

1 activation ~ 500 points is kind of high, but those big IG formations can soak up a LOT of fire.  Ask DS, he should know.

Where are you located, I have some Russ I can part with if you're interested.  They're E40k models and un-assembled and un-primed.  PM me if you're interested.

Thanks for answers, they helped a lot. I think that I'll buy the Character pack just-in-case, I believe I can convert some miniatures in it to tank commanders. Perhaps I should get some Exodus Wars Guild tanks as Chimeras. The Armoured Transport squadron seems to be a good deal, for about ?6 I could get 10 nicely different looking Chimeras with two choices for turrets. Now if I could only find alternatives for Sentinels. Also, I made a new list, this time 3000 points.

Regimental HQ
-Supreme Commander
-12 Infantry
-4 Fire Support
-9 Chimeras
=650

Infantry Company
-Commander
-18 Infantry
-4 Fire Support
-2 Snipers
-1 Hydra
=550

Artillery Company
-9 Basilisks
=650

Sentinel Squadron
-4 Sentinels
=100

Tank Company
- Vanquisher
-9 Leman Russes
-1 Hydra
=700

Flak Battery
-3 Hydras
=150

Super Heavy Tank
-1 Baneblade
=200

Now the most expensive unit is the Tank company, so that one major flaw should be eliminated. I added some Hydras to keep the skies clear. I also considered Thunderbolts, but this kind of approach renders enemy AA useless. I added a Baneblade to support either the Tank company or the Regimental HQ. This could also be changed to a Shadowsword in case a Titan pops up. Those Snipers in the Infantry company were just for getting the list to full 3000. I think they can give some support fire, as the company will be mostly sitting back, shooting at things and guarding the artillery. I thought about taking a second squadron of Sentinels to screen the Basilisks. If I place all my artillery to one thight formation (weak againist counter artillery, I know...) and place Sentinels around them to screen them from every direction. This would prevent deep striking units from smashing my artillery in close combat, but fast skimmers would still be dangerous since they can shoot the Basilisks. I should playtest this list with some paper counters or something. Any suggestions/comments about my list?

If you want the real thing, I'm pretty sure I have some Sentinels to spare. Mine are the plastic SM/TL era ones.

The metal SG sentinels are some of the nicest models they sell.

I have built my first scratchbuilt Epic tank!

It's a wide-hull company command Chimera. Unfortunately I was too enthusiastic to finish it, so I don't have any WIP pictures. It is built of plasticard, 1mm and 0.25mm thick. The Multilaser is made of 1.2mm plastic rod. The Lasguns and the antennas are 0.8mm welding wire. The base is 40x30mm. I didn't have any good pictures of a Chimera, so I had to create this with imagination and some pictures the W40K rulebook had. That explains mostly why there aren't any good details. I used this to test a possible colour scheme, but after a few coats of paint, I decided to try something else, so I left this without highlights. I'll possibly strip the paint and try another winter scheme later. The text on the turret says Dalo, which is possible name for my army. And on the doors it says XXVI, which means 26.
