ok, i was really considering bidding on this till I saw the overseas shipping. $19 to the EU ? Thats insane for something so small. I mean shipping some ork lead bits to Australia only cost me ?4, whats that, $8? It really gets me when sellers try to extract unreasonable shipping- must put people off a lot.

It's a balance... if it puts people off then the bid normal comes in real cheap, and you end up getting a better bargin.

Not necessarily - if you think someone will be desperate for your goods, the shipping price becomes inelastic. Putting off the small bidders isn't necessarily a problem in this case, and is actually a bonus.
For example, you list your ultra-rare epic imperial psi-titan for sale. You offer ?1 or $2 shipping, barely covering the postage cost. All the nutters desperate for a psi-titan happen to be on holiday/sick/incarcerated that week. A small-time bidder bids ?1 for it...and no-one else does. You just sold your irreplaceable piece of gaming history for ?2 to some noob who thought he was buying some kind of wizard for his WFB empire army. Once he gets over his disappointment (what magic college is this supposed to be from?) he lists it for auction and gets ?200 for it. One of the nutters gets early release from jail and strangles you for offences to gaming. Anyway, having a ?20 "postage" on it would definatley have put off the noob, but won't make any difference to the nutters, they will simply take the high postage cost into account when they place their bid (maybe the prison has internet access...actually that would be a bad idea for a prison). OK, maybe no-one will take up your generous offer of ?20 postage. But so what? You lost a few pennies to eBay for the chance of making a load of money. At least you get to keep your psi-titan this way.
Psychologically, setting a high starting bid and/or reserve price is far more offputting to potential (serious) bidders than a high shipping price.

The winning bid was $17 US. I expected the final bid to be higher.

Even with $6 for shipping, I'm still surprised the winning bid wasn't higher.
