Hi,

I'm speaking here for a few French players who've playtested the 4.4.1 version of the Tau army list and have some questions about it.

Bear in mind that I know very little about the Tau list, so if any mistakes are made and/or if some questions seem silly, blame the translator, i.e. me.  :)


Coordinate Fire

The Coordinate Fire special rule requires a maximum distance of 15cm, while the Commander capacity (which basically does the same thing for assaults) requires a maximum distance of 5cm.

Is this difference intentional or is that a typo? And if it's not a typo, why the difference?

Markerlight Sentry Drone Turrets

The deployment rules are unclear: where exactly are the drone turrets deployed?

Orca transport capacity and exo-armour suits

Crisis suits take up 2 spaces in an Orca, but Broadsides only take 1. Why? If this is a typo and Broadsides actually take up 2 spaces, then a formation of Broadsides cannot be transported in an Orca (as it would require a transport capacity of 12).

Alos, the Orca can carry up to 10 units, but Crisis suits come in formations of either 4 or 6 units, and so take up either 8 or 12 spaces. This means it is impossible for an Orca to carry a formation of 6 Crisis suits. Intentional? Why not give the Orca a transport capacity of 12?

Note that a transport capacity of 12 would also allow the Orca to carry a Fire Warrior cadre AND its Fire Warrior upgrade.

Drones and BMs

Why is there a difference depending on whether or not the formation consists only of drones?

Crisis and Broadside transport slots

Crisis suit units represent teams of 2-3 crisis suits and a few drones. Broadside units represent single broadside suits. That's one of the rationales behind Crisis = infantry, Broadside = LV as well. In terms of transport space, the difference is obvious.

15cm is intentional. As far as I have figured out it's to allow coordinated fire to be used without forcing the Tau to be intermingled by the enemy.


Correct. There is a danger of forcing Tau armies to bunch up, which seems a recipe for disaster for the Tau and a little unfair on them.

To re-iterate the text in the Tau rules:
- each sentry turret is a formation of one
- it is placed after objectives are declared, and before either force sets up

They can be placed anywhere on the table. However, there is scope for restricting their placement to anywhere on the table outside of the enemies deployment zone. Comments?

Yep. Which is why a Crisis team takes up more transport room than a single Broadside.

Initially, the Orca had a transport capacity of 8, but this was increased to 10 to accomodate Kroot. There is scope for increasing this further to 12, but I am not totally sure that it is necessary to up the cargo area just so that we can fit in a Crisis Cadre and upgrade.

Again, comments?

Yes, the original Drone rules was almost identicle to the Grot rule. An entire formation of units which dont count for blast markers starts to get a bit strange. But at the same time the Drones are disregarded by their Tau comrades.

I personally think that it should be upped to 12.  I might actually use an Orca then.  I always upgrade my Crisis Suits to 6 stands,
