It's 5.  It was a change in 7th edition and the dwarf book was written towards the end of 6th edition.

Ah ok thanks Bombot..  That causes some issues with the unit sizes I have then, suppose it just means I'll need to expand them  :D

In current edition (thats 7th) you need 5 models for each rank. There's no exceptions to this rule.

Ok army composition so far is

Quarrellers upgraded to Rangers with great weapons and shields.  (19)

Warriors shields and hand weapons(15)

Long beards with great weapons (13)

Quarrallers (16)

Thunderers (15)

Organ cannon

Miners (12)

Hopefully if Royal mail and ebay are on my side I've got the following on the way as well -

Ironbreakers (18)
Warriors (20)
Cannons (2)
Stone thrower
Gyrocopter

My plan currently is to have a line like this

      Thunderers, Cannon, Cannon, quarrellers

Long beards, warriors, rangers, iron breakers, warriors, miners

So the great weapon guys can wrap around the sides as Tom suggested whilst the warriors and iron breakers take the brunt of the charges..  The rangers will either be in the line or act as a reserve.. The gyro will go after enemy artillery.

Photo's on way as soon as everything arrives (fingers crossed here!)

Iron breakers arrived last night, more warriors, thunderers and quarrellers ordered this morning...

Broken the 2k point value with troops now not reliant on loads of rune items...

I'll give it some thought... unless he is stupid enough to stand in front of your cannons, or to charge your slayers, that could cause issues. 800pts gives us plenty of points to play with though ;).

My Dwarves came out to play over the weekend too ;), a horrific clash with the Wood Elves.

Alas... I had very little firepower painted up, and I resolved to never, EVER use unpainted models again. Instead I had a mere organ gun and 12 thunderers in a 1500 point game.

1 Thane (Axe w/runes of strike first, +1 attack and fire), (Armour w/runes of +1 Ward Save, 1+ Armour save)
1 BSB (Banner w/runes of double unit strength and +1 combat res.)
18 Hammerers (inc Thane and BSB), full command
25 Longbeards, full command
12 Thunderers, full command
13 Warriors w/Great weapons, full command
13 Warriors w/great weapons, full command
1 Organ Gun

I took an offensive list, and after repulsing a pathetic charge by two units of Dryads, and close quarter shooting (for the strength bonus) from the Elves, I drove them back into the woods (the terrain generator was being harsh - 5 woods and 2 hills). I charged headlong into the woods, and slaughtered the remaining Dryads, his Way Watchers and more than a few Glade Guard. My Dragon Slayer alone totalled several Dryads, six Way Watchers and a Wood Elf Noble on a Giant Eagle. My organ gun was out of range the first turn, the second turn killed six Dryads, and then rolled misfire and six (fails to fire) THREE times in a row, that is like a 1 in 45,000 chance :S. When it finally didn't misfire on the last turn it was out of range.

My hammerers got devestated by archer fire, but made up for it by trashing the Wood Elf wardancers. My thane with them had an axe with strike first so not many of them got to fight back after they lost the majority of there front rank despite doing the funny dance that gives them a 4+ ward save.

My longbeards slew a Giant Eagle, a unit of Dryads and then held up the Wardancers until they were killed fighting to the last man.

The units of Warriors with two handed weapons had mixed results, one along with the Dragon slayer crushed an entire flank on it's own, the other never made it into combat but forced the enemy flank to keep retreating.

In general, I think the army performed well, but I needed more firepower, I also should have used the Hammerers better, they just wandered around alot and got shot at until they tore apart the Wardancers. I suffered from the greatest sin of a general... indecisiveness. I also should have given the hammerers shields to protect them from archer fire.

The Dragon Slayer and the left hand unit of Warriors with great weapons were definately the best value troops point for point. The basic dwarf infantry can outfight almost any enemy, and is certainly a match for almost all enemy core troops.

Wow sounds like a vicious battle there Tom..

I'm going to get my throng (yes throng, there is an r in there!) out and take photo's of it.. I've cheated somewhat and only purchased items that were painted already...

I made a vow not to field unpainted forces like you and then decided to start WHFB!  So off to eBay to buy nicely painted miniatures..
