Planes are easy enough and spacecraft become the objective. Once the enemies orbital defence is degraded you win. Its the victory condition as it were. BFG comes in to deliver new players or as a fall back to ensure orbital defences aren't lost.

Only if you do it on a planetary scale. I did it on a galactic scale.

Instead of lowlands, river valley, mountains and hills, I used empty space, asteroid field, habitable planet and nebula.

You ferry your armies around in BFG fleets and fight ground wars against your opponent to take control of his planets.

We even had rules for a trade network :).

It was called Empire of the Stars, and was on the EPICentre about 10 years ago, alas, I have no idea where the rules are now, so if anyone has them....

I think a limited (in scope) combined campaign rules set can be made to use the Ground tiles.
I have ideas in my head for various kinds of bases (Defensive, Airbase, and Supply) that allow different things (defensive forces, aircraft, resupply to 'nearby' forces), different scales of cities (city, metropolis, hive) each with their own requirements and structures, structures for cities (factory, training center, refinery, spaceport, bases), different types of armies with different map movement (Infantry, Mechanized),  Air Forces being able to strike at cities structures or armies or bases (but a limit on how many air missions you can have happen).

Lots of cool ideas.  Make the detail not in how the core of the system operates (resource gathering etc), but in how all that is used.

Has it occurred to anyone else that marketing this as a Warhammer expansion is a back door way of releasing what would otherwise have been a Specialist Game?

I've already started on a Terrain piece with the Ork Idol. And as I said the 2 tiles will make good Flying Bases for say BIG Aircraft (like the Chaos Hvy Bomber). ?But  I find it interesting about your ideas on a Sci-fi version ... :alien:
