I had a chat with Tuff at Salute, but I wanted to get some further comments on varnish. I currently use GWs Ardcoat (a much under appreciated varnish, in my opinion), but it comes out satin/gloss.

Tuff mentioned that he uses three types of varnish, but it still looks thin and matt, which is really good. I have heard that Testors Dullcoat is really good.

The thing is, I want a brush pot varnish, and it seems that the brush Dullcoat actually removes acrylic paint! Of course, I would put this over a coat of Ardcoat, but the concept does scare me!

So, what do people use? I would like a cover which is gaming strong, thin and ends in a matt finish. And, no spray cans.

Thanks.

I use GW Satin Varnish, followed by Dullcote.

It results in a perfect, strong, matte finish.

Both sprays, however.

Why don't you want to use sprays?

GW does do a Matt varnish in a paint.. you might have to ask for it as the fools at HQ don't give us a slot on our paint rack for it, so we normally use it to hold doors open or to tuck behind books to stop them falling off the shelf and so on..

btw if you use the GW Gloss instead of satin, you will get an identical finish but it will be tougher.

I'm not certain how much Dullcote can dull down the shiny finish... I don't want to end up with slightly-shiny minis, so I havn't tried using gloss varnish then Dullcote yet.

It's worked when I've tried it.

Polly's S clear flat, water based in the bottle and brushed on. I've been using it for years.  Brush it over decals, then when the entire model is dry I spray the whole piece with Testor's Dullcoat, or any other number of clear flat sprays. :D  You guys have seen my work, nothing like Tuffskull's, but only liquids, like a water hole, etc., are glossy. I use Polly's S brush on Clear Gloss for those ...  :D

Depends on what I painted. Sometimes clear varnish by GW spray othertimes Purity seal (matt varnish) by GW.

Good results.

Thanks guys. I dont particularly like spray varnish coverage, and prefer brush based ones.

I have heard that Testors do a Dullcote brush acrylic varnish, which doesnt paint strip  :glare: , but I cant find it. Has anyone used it?
