Many Moons ago in a desperate bid to stay living I was forced to part with most of my gaming materials, and unfortunately my massive epic collection was part of that. I always felt bad about parting with all of it, and would like to go back in time and not have, but it helped pay the rent and feed me for almost 3 months so I guess it was a Decent Trade off  :p
Since about a Year ago I started collecting epic again, buying lots, and individual items here and there. Since then I have amassed quite a box of Epic, but Now I don't know where to begin  :(
I think my biggest hang up is basing, Squares or Rectangles...I am partial to the old squares, but the new rectangles have there Appeal (mainly for painting...they look alot easier to paint), And then from there...Which Space Marine Chapter, Squat Army, Imperial Guard, Ork Clan, Tyranid, Tau army, or Chaos Chapter to paint first.
So which Bases do most people usually go with?

Hi, I started collecting epic again about a year ago after giving up and getting rid of most of my stuff (inc half a chapter or marines) in the mid 90's and had the same issues.  in the end I tend to mix and max (though not within the same formations).  My whitescar army is the most mixed with a company on square, the rest on rectangles and large numbers of bikes and terminators on 2p coins and the mixed look is fine, actually gives it a bit of character.

The models I have on new bases are great as they are easier to paint and look good, but are so expensive that Ive resorted to using strips of platicard  to pad out my IG rather than getting more bases off SG.  Anyway, the new bases are nice, but arent worth getting hung up about as the old ones look great and fit the purpose fine IMO :)

The 10x40s are expensive?  I've bot a bunch of them I'll never use.

I have used different basing systems for different armies.  I use either round washers or the long strip bases.  If using second hand miniatures where you have heaps of the old square bases and a real mix of things I have been cutting them off the bases and doing new bases because I prefer the long strip ones.  I have found ceral box carboard smeared with a quick setting rock hard putty like sellys knead it to be perfect for sticking you minis on with and for creating a really nice strong base.

I am a bit all over the place with my painting doing a little bit of my titan legion then a bit of my marines etc.  I would recomend starting with the army that will be easiest to get together and painted (ie I done nids first as my painting style was to undercoat white and then paint them with a wash).  One of the other local guys here painted two armies in a month really nicely by choosing effective paint schemes that dont take ages to paint (spray painting with the base colour then wanted then shading with washes and then adding some details and and chapter markings with paint or fine liner pens).

Well, i am also a skin flint :p

But at ?7 for 16 bases I think its a bit excessive particularly if you like horde armies like I do.  You could probably get a good price for a load of the new bases on ebay, the square ones seem to go for a bit anyway.

I got a bunch of them back when the GWUS archives were open. When ordering some infantry spures they just threw in a bunch of bases without charging extra. I think I probably got a couple of hundred strip bases like that. (And no, I'm not selling them :p )

Well As it stands I have a HUGE amount of the square bases, and a enough to do one Army on the Strips. I got to work cleaning up some of the metal stuff....man, the mold lines and casting inperfections were rampant back in the day. I have primed a bunch of stuff, But i am worried about priming sprues, as it may obscure some of the detail. I mainly use black primer, but was thinking for the troops I might want to switch to white, or grey even.

You can get 16 bases for ?3 if you know where to look.

(As far as I'm aware, the only way to find the above is by doing a search for 'base' or similar. It doesn't appear in any of the menus.)

@ AxelFendersson- cheers for that, most interesting.  Daemonkin also PM'd to let me know the same thing.  Damnable GW covert pricing!

@bmans5- Spraying on the sprue doesnt obscure detail in my experience, but if you are planning on using the square bases it will make the models (Particularly new ones) very hard to fit as the square base holes are rather small.

I also stay away from the white GW primer as it gunged up my whitescars with really horrid, chalky paint.  Black always sprays fine, as did the tamiya dark grey I used last week (in fact I was really impressed by the tamiya- good cover, slightly matt and great colour.  Tanfastic primer basically.  Only probelm was its small size and relatively high price), but whenever I use the GW white it comes out a horrid, pitted mess.  Yack.

I'm glad its not just me with GW white spray. Always gives you that textured feel!

I've sprayed all my epic infantry using GW black and never has a problem with it.

I have always used paint shop sprays and have been happy with them, good surfaces (on 40k figs, I use brush with epic scale) and costs around 2-3?. :D

I prefer the square bases for looks, but the rectangular ones sure are easier to paint. I have my Ultramarines on both. I just try to avoid having a mix in the same detachment. So far it hasn't been a problem for me.

As for which army to paint first, if you're learning E:A, then go with one of the armies that's easier to learn, like IG and Orks. Keep in mind that Squats don't officially exist, but there are some fan lists for Squats and Demiurg. If you're getting "reacquainted" with old Epic, I'd go with whatever army you like best. Whatever you choose, start small. I've found that working on a detachment at a time, rather than trying to do a bunch at once, works really well and sooner than you think you'll have 3,000 points painted.

I use old square ones. You can find some on Ebay, chaosorc.com etc.
Or even make it yourself with plasticard and a thing to make holes in paper sheet (don't know the english name of this). Can boring if you need tons of bases but at least that's cheap.

For the painting, well, the best is to have a goal: Try to design some little core army (something like 3000 points), respecting the rules you play, and trying of course to put in it some model you like (better motivation). Then when you're done with this, you can add some company or support.

Cool have to order me some. I have gotten Started, decided with a Ork Gargant (and some Squat Stuff). Just curious on some basing people do. Do you think flocked with fine Ballast and then painted and dry brushed looks better than just painting the base a color (green, black, red, etc...) and then adding the flocking looks better.
