I wasn't here 6 months ago. You were supposed to wait until my coming, as the Oracle presaged. :p

P.S. And so why hasn't anybody here built these and stickied them?

Because most of them suck.  :p

Seriously, though, what would be the point of building them at this stage?  Those are just concept sketches and not exactly likely to make it into production in that form.  Even if a few of them make it as verbatim copies from those sketches, the majority won't.  There also isn't any idea on what their abilities might be.

If you just want to scratchbuild a unit and make up stats, why even be limited to the FW concept sketches?

Sorry but I'm afraid I'd have to agree. Some of the designs are ok but they just don't look particularly chaosy to me. In fact some look more like Necron machines IMO!
Give me something a bit more steam punk with skulls and less Matrix...

Apparently, I need to choose different smileys because that just didn't get my intent across at all...

My opinion of them is along the lines of what WMN said - they just aren't Chaos-y.  Some look Necron.  Some look like mechanical Nids.  Almost none look like the established GW conventions of Chaos visual styling.

Some of them are actually kind of cool, imho, but they don't fit chaos.

I'll agree with that. I like most of them, but they don't look chaosy enough.

Most of them look like mechanized bugs or snails and not like daemonengines.

But what is the chaos design idiom, anyway? We approached this in a different topic, but it's fun to chase it around. Kind of like chasing a naked daemonette around, I suppose.

The 8-pointed chaos symbol. Analogous to the aquila.

Unhappy skulls. Some people like them, some people are tired of them. Imperium makes significant use of... happy skulls? Presumably the Emperor's happy skull.

Spikes, tusks, trophy racks. These also appear in modified forms for Orks and Dark Eldar.

Riveted armor bands. Also used with the orks.

Pyramidal doo-dads, only seen on Epic 40,000 component vehicles. I like these.

Nurgle war machines feature large fleshy areas on... what? Standard template designs?

Slaaneshi war machines of the 40K era seemed to be wingless bipeds with elongated studs.

Heresy era stuff with aforementioned design elements.

So what I'm trying to sneak up on here, is that Chaos elements seem somewhat poorly defined. Given the subject matter, can chaos be defined this way? Are we doomed to chaos looking like other races' junk, with spikes and Nurgle trifoils? I hope someone has the answer...

Well I'd tend to agree that the "Space Marine tank with spikes on it" is a bit tiresome. Also there's a lot of silly chaos convertsions with tentacles on them (I've done some myself :p ) However I think the point is that they look mechanical - like a Necron thing - rather than something that has been posessed, and is transforming the machine from within.
It is difficult to say exactly what these things should look like- Especially if they're to be used by Chaos undivided. Chaos god-specific ones are definitely easier. However I think it would look realy cool to have a machine where the armour shell is cracked revealing just tiny gaps of pulsating flesh underneath... a bit like the Eldar Avatart. No tentacles, no goofy spikes and stuff. Some of the FW designs might work pretty well this way if they got a daemonic face that merges into the armour of the vehicle like that. Combined with some chaos stars and other filigree it could be pretty nifty.

In short: Show us more flesh! :D

Oh dear I hope not. :(

I personally think Chaos should be streamlined and seductive if for no other reason than to contrast the blocky/utilitarian/Soviet design philosophy that seems to be the Imperium.

I frankly find the whole Spiky bitz with skulls thing to be rather tiresome and unimaginative.
