Personally I prefer the look of the FW chimeras, plus the cheapness but the casting quality and britle resin is a definate downside.
For new players Id say it depends what is more important- if its durability and simplicity of purchase then go for SG. If cheapness and a more realistic style then FW.

I've got all the F/W Epic and sometimes the molding isn't the best. But generally they are good pieces. I don't like how brittle thin parts are ... and of course you have to get the releaser off and use enamel to base coat.

All of my FW Chimerae and Leman Russ variants have been good casts; it was the super-heavies and titans that were the most problematic for me.
Traditional hardware-store primer has always done well for me, but as L4 says, you gotta wash 'em.

Yes, most Spray is enamal not water based. So that is fine once you wash'm ! But I'd recommend the S/G over F/W ... more durable and easier to paint ...

So, in conclusion:
Some people like Specialist Games. Some people like Forge World. And one person likes to romp all over Yen's warm, brown body.

I agree that FW's customer service has always been great. Their overall consistency is bad but they quickly replace the bad stuff (makes you wonder if they couldn't save money just doing it up front).
Don't buy FW stuff second hand unless you can inspect it personally. I have a set of Bommaz that have horrible casts that I bought off eBay. The entire wing surface is grainy, which not only obscures detail but makes even normal cover-up techniques (like painting checks) very difficult.
Regarding scale - Minis have intentional scale distortions in order to create a dramatic effect. The FW models are straight scale-downs from 40K and consequently have the scale distortions typical to 40K rather than the traditional Epic distortions. Which you like better is simply a matter of taste.

Nice pics ! F/W stuff tends to be bigger and closer to scale (?!)... But the F/W L/Russ are smaller than S/Gs and the F/W SHTs bigger than S/Gs ... got'm all ! As far as Aircraft, the F/W are so much bigger ... we gave'm different stats ... They are entirely different birds !

Excellent work ! And that is a great idea mounting the F/W G/Kgts on the old square bases with banners poles ... I was thinking the same thing as like all F/W Troops, they a bit more "fiddly" than most ! Naplam - your stuff is Hot !
