Roads. ?They make an Epic battlefield look so much better, but I'm always looking for "the better road." ?

I currently use a couple different options. ?One is Woodland Scenics foam 5mm wide HO trackbed with a dark gray drybrush. ?This works pretty well and is beveled on both edges. ?But as it is lightweight foam, it can curl at the ends. ?To try and eliminate the curl, I ran 18mm wire into about the end 5" of each section to allow me to bend the ends flat.

The other thing I have tried is a cork track bed. ?

This isn't quite as handy as the piece comes in two "perforated" sections approximately 4mm wide beveled on opposite sides. ?So to get a road with beveled edges, you have to separate the strips and flip one upside down to match the other. ?As you can see in the picture this leaves a gap down the center of your otherwise beautiful road.

Also an issue with the trackbed products is that there are no curved sections so all roads tend to be straight. ?I recently came across the Woodland Scenics Foam Track Bed sheet and will try cutting curved sections out of that to see if that solves the curve issue.

I'm wondering what other TacComm members use for roads? ?

I've thought of using plasticard stips textured with sand/ballist but suspect there will be a warping issue. ?

Hardboard/masonite might work but it is a pain to bevel all those road sections and the weight does add up after so many sections.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

I like the look of what you've done so far anyway. :)

I have some plasticard roads (1mm thick) but they tend to slide around a bit and are not ideal.

Check out this site. I haven't tried it myself but it looks easy enough...

I haven't used many roads as all my urban pieces appart from cardboard ones are ruins and a road would be choked, however something to consider is size.

I see Imperial setups as being a series of wide dual or more carriage ways. Enough for two land Raiders side by side. Sweeping past the massive gothic buildings we like.

Then off that would be a series of other roads, not straight varying from land raider width to warren like rhino width.

Gaming wise I think we assume most areas of the cities are razed from space/arty so don't do the shanty style areas and concentrate on the Imperial 'market town' for simplicities sake.

What is your gaming strategy for your roads?

Something else to consider is wrecks. Either a bunch of 'dead' z gauge civilain cars and/or wrecked tanks. I'd say this is a dangerous terrain test to offset the advantage a road can give.

I've used strips of mdf board. They don't curl but since they're 2-3 mm high they tend to look a bit big.

I'll second JR Miniatures. I haven't bought any road sections from them, but if they're anything like their river sections, I'd buy them. JR's river sections are superb, IMO.

Looks like what you have should be pretty easy to work with.

Why not cut out a small triangular section.  When the 2 pieces are put back together, you'll have a "curve", though somewhat angular.  You can then round off the point on the outside of that curve to make it look a bit softer.

By varying the size of the triangle cut out, you can vary your curves.  Larger cut outs mean sharper curves.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. ?

Our local game store does carry the JR terrain and I've checked out the roads. ?They do look nice, and my brother has some of the Miniature World Maker silicon roads which are similar to JR's. ?Both are good for dirt roads, but don't quite make good asphalt roads. ?

That DIY site for silicon roads looks interesting, I'll have to give that a try and see if it's possible to make modern looking asphalt roads. ?

WMN, do you bevel the edges of your mdf roads? ?Any pictures? ?I think the mdf would resist warping and the edges lifting up, I'm just trying to avoid all that beveling. Dusty work.....

I have used angled cuts on a couple road sections to make corners with the foam track bed. ?How do you think that looks?

As far as how we typically use the roads, as in the following pics they usually run the long table length connecing terrain features. ? They don't get set up in a "city" proper. As we usually use alot of road sections, buying premade mfr roads could get expensive.

Looks pretty good.  Those rock spyres look great.  Did you make them?  Been meaning to give that a try.

I found some really thin 4x6 green indoor/outdoor rugs.  I'm going to try just painting roads directly on them w/ latex paint.  They were only $10 US each, so I should be able to do a couple of versions.  If it works, we'll be able to just roll one  up and put down another.  They also came in tan for desert and grey for ash waste.

I made the rock spires a while back for 40K but they do double duty for Epic just fine.   I love it when terrain works for multiple scales.  :D

Monkey Butler! That's a good terrain setup.

And no, I'm not calling you a Monkey Butler. That's just a replacement swear word I made up.
