Well Dobbsy was over on this side of the world again this New Year and, instead of bringing his gorgeous Tau, he wanted to take Tyranids for a spin.

He hasn't yet decided on a paint scheme for his Bugs, so I let him use mine and Drek, PipBoy, BloodNGuts, and I got together for a couple of games to let him see how they work.

We weren't able to get in as many games as we'd hoped (they always take longer than you think they will!), but we did get in three solid matches featuring Space Marine (2500 points), Necrons (3000 points) and Orks (3000 points).

The first game was vs Space Marines, and I hope to get this and the other battles up in the next couple of days.

Battlefield:

4x6
Marines chose edge deployment.

Deployment:

Marines kept no reserves.

Tyranids kept the Lictor Swarm and both Infiltration Swarms in reserve.

Deployment as follows, with Scout Detachment and Speeder 1 on overwatch.

Strategy Roll: Space Marines, first action given to Tyranids.

Assault Swarm 2 doubles forward to crouch down behind the sandy hills.

Attack Swarm 2 tries to march (Dobbsy didn't take a "Road March" action, as he wanted to get into cover at the end), but stumbles a bit down the asphalt and only takes a single move.

With the enemy just barely in range, the Whirlwinds sustain fire on Attack Swarm 2 and take out a Ravener and a Zoanthrope.

Attack Swarm 1 double forward to fire on Speeder Detachment 1 and knocks down 1 hovering Land Speeder.

Assault Swarm 1 marches its brood straight towards the enemy.

Tactical HQ mounts up and doubles forward to fire on Attack Swarm 1, but their fast deployment prevents them from doing any damage.

Despite being very eager to get stuck in, the Genestealer Swarm fails to double and stays hunkered down in the ruins.

Speeder Detachment 1 requires the help of the Supreme Commander to advance on Attack Swarm 1, which they ineffectively fire upon.

Speeder Detachment 2 doubles over to shoot at Attack Swarm 1 as well and takes out 1 Exocrine and 1 Zoanthrope.

The Warhound doubles forward as well and unloads everything on Attack Swarm 1, but merely takes out a Biovore and a Zoanthrope.

The Predator Detachment doubles down the road and kills one Haruspex from Attack Swarm 2.

The Scout Detachment stays on overwatch?

End of Turn:

All Marine formations rally.

Attack Swarm 1 uses a Spore to spawn back an Exocrine, whole Attack Swarm 2 gets back a Ravener.

Turn 2

No teleports.

Strategy Roll: Space Marines

The Tactical HQ moves forward to engage Assault Swarm 1 with the support of the two Land Speeder Detachments and the Warhound.  Much to their surprise, the swarm's Gargoyles leap upon both Land Speeder detachments, dragging them directly into the fight and allowing Attack Swarm 1 to support the Tyranids!

The fight is brutal and bloody, Speeder Detachment 1 loses 3 Land Speeders, including the Librarian, while Detachment 2 loses 1 Speeder, the Tactical HQ is unharmed? the same can't be said for the Tyranids as only the three Tyranid Warriors survive and they back off into another ruined building.  Speeder Detachment 1 breaks and falls back, away from the Tyranid advance.

Despite the victory, Speeder Detachment 2 fails to follow up, even with the Supreme Commanders encouragement, and takes a hold action to regroup and clear its Blast marker.

The Tyrant of Attack Swarm 1 snarls with rage? and then snarls even louder as its swarm fails to sustain fire and just shoots fitfully at the Tactical HQ.  Still, 2 Razorbacks and 2 Tactical Marines are taken out of the fight.

The Predator Detachment targets Attack Swarm 2 and sustains fire.  Two Haruspex, 1 Biovore? and the Hive Tyrant are mowed down.

The three surviving Warriors of Assault Swarm 1 use a double to make a lateral advance against the Predators, placing a single Blast marker?

Which is just what the Genestealers were waiting for and they leap forward to engage the Marine armour? completely ripping it apart while losing a single unit!  (I have no idea *why* I didn't use my Scouts' overwatch fire to thin them out a bit.)

The Warhound Titan gives chase to Assault Swarm 1, advancing after them and gunning down 1 Tyranid Warrior.

Assault Swarm 2 doubles back to get the remnants of Attack Swarm 2 within synapse range for next turn and has no targets in range.

The Whirlwinds sustain fire on Assault Swarm 2, killing 3 Termagants and 1 Hormagaunt.

The remains of Attack Swarm 2 actually *take* a Hold action, not moving at all and don't go to ground.

The Scouts double forward into the Cathedral and fire on the two Warriors of Assault Swarm 1 to no effect?

End of Turn:

All Marine formations rally.

Attack Swarm 1 spawns a Haruspex.

Assault Swarm 1 uses a Spore to regain 3 Raveners.

Assault Swarm 2 requires a Spore to generate 1 Haruspex and 1 Gargoyle.

Turn 3

Assault Swarm 2 takes the remains of Attack Swarm 2 under control

The Lictor Swarm shows up to harass the Whirlwinds, while the 2 Lesser Nodes show up near various objectives?

Strategy Roll: Space Marines

Detecting the nearby Lictors, the Whirlwinds engage them? by backing up just out of counter-charge range and gunning them down.  Not a single Spook survives!

The Warhound sustains fire on the small Assault Swarm 1, blowing away everything except a single Tyranid Warrior. (DANGIT!)

Attack Swarm 1 advances and the gun-brood unloads on Speeder Detachment 2, completely obliterating the Marine skimmers.

Assault Swarm 2 tries to march, but all the new brood-mates aren't playing well together and they only manage a single move forward.

The lone survivor of Speeder Detachment 1 hesitates, and then regains its nerve, to advance on the nearby Lesser Synapse Node.  By the will of the Emperor, they are able to BBQ the alien infestation, clearing the ruins.

The Scout Detachment advances on Attack Swarm 1, taking out 2 Zoanthropes and a Haruspex.

Not doing so well this time, the Genestealers ambush the Scout Detachment, trashing 2 Razorbacks, but losing three Genestealers and being pushed back in a narrow Marine win.

The last Tyranid Warrior unit of Attack Swarm 1 tries to go on overwatch, but gets spooked and just stands its ground.

The Tactical HQ doubles deep into Tyranid territory to fire on the second Lesser Synapse Node, but does no damage.

Feeling the heat, Lesser Node 2 goes on overwatch, despite having no broods?

End of Turn:

Speeder Detachment 1 fails to rally and keeps its 1 Blast marker.

Attack Swarm 1 and Lesser Synapse Node 1 fail to spawn anything.

Assault Swarm 1 gains 2 Gargoyles, while Assault Swarm 2 gains a measly Termagant.

Space Marines: 1 (TSNP) vs Tyranids: 1 (BTS)

Turn 4

Assault Swarm 1 grabs a couple of friends from Assault Swarm 2.

Strategy Roll: Tyranids

Attack Swarm 1 sustains fire on the Scout Detachment and the bio-cannons demolish 2 Razorbacks and 2 Scout units, sending the surviving young Marines packing.

Assault Swarm 2 engages the Tactical HQ, losing 2 Haruspex, but overwhelming 3 Tactical Marines and wrecking a Rhino, forcing the surviving Marines to fall back.

The Whirlwinds sustain fire on the closely packed Assault Swarm 2 and Lesser Node 2, but their rain of missiles has no effect.

Assault Swarm 1 doubles forward to grab Marine Objective 2 and their wild fire breaks Speeder Detachment 1.

The Warhound advances on Assault Swarm 2, but only manages to kill a single Termagant.

The Genestealers think about doubling, but wind up making a single move that *just* gets them near enough to Marine Objective 1? (My Whirlwinds were 1cm shy of contesting the Objective? I'd forgotten to move them back after my cheeky "6cm firefight" against the Lictors in the previous turn!  Guess I got what was coming to me?*sigh*)

End of Turn:

All Marine formations rally.

Space Marines: 0 (none) vs Tyranids: 2 (BTS, T-n-H)

Nice batrep save for the fact the Tyranids won. Again. Is it just my poor memory or have we yet to see a batrep where they get their chitin butts handed to them on a platter?

Actually, I give them "Lazerbacks" precisely because they can't affect AT targets on their own.  With them garrisoned, and Marines usually going first, it allows me to, usually, pick a suitable target immediately.  I guess I'm not big on over-specialization, but you've given me something to think about, I might just try it!

On turn 3 the surviving Lesser Node didn't spawn?

It failed to spawn... poor little thing...

Oh, Tyranids do get beat on occasion... *laugh*  But this is the Tyranid section of the board, shouldn't only winning BatReps be posted here?  *laugh*

I've got two more BatReps with Dobbsy to post yet... just wait and see.
