Article by JJ in Fanatic Online announcing the release of the Chaos army list and stuff and discussing how to manage without a full line of minis.

Question:  Are the "two sprues" being released even able to make a single full formation in either the Black Legion or Lost and Damned lists from a single "box"?

The "basic" Chaos Marine Retinue is 8 Chaos Marine stands while the core Coven is 12 stands.

I have a recollection of the Chaos sprues being a little more "sparse" than the Ork or Space Marine sprues.

IIRC, 2 sprues would make one retinue and about 2/3 of a coven.

The problem is that the sprues are so diverse.  You get cultists and CSM and daemons and termies and cult marines...

But trading excess to get more of what you need is what the Trades section of TacCom is for, right?  :)

The nice thing about cultists is that they can be anything that would pass for IG - and even some things that wouldn't.

I worte the exact contents of the spure elsewhere but to quickly summarize you will get 6 stands of CSM and 4 stands of cultists in a single box so you'll probably want to buy at least 2 or 3 boxes to build something usefull.

So, not a full Retinue and a third of a Cultist coven?

Does that "4 stand of cultists" include the Beastmen?

Here's the list "borrowed" from Warmaster's other thread.

The number on the left indicated the number of stands

Anyway the exact contents of a single chaos spure are:

1 fleshhounds
1 bloodletters
1 plaguebearer
1 daemonette
1 flamer
2 cultists + one cultist character to add to one of the stands
2 mutants/beastmen
1 Khorne Berzerker
1 Chosen
1 Noisemarine
1 Havoc
3 CSMs + 3 individual character models (Lord, Sorceror, Banner)

Edit:
Also note it says one (1) sprue.  The exact number of sprues per boxed has been guessed to be 2, but that is not currently known

All the other plastic infantry is ~30-40 stands per box.  2 sprues would be ~35 stands of infantry, so I'm pretty confident it will be 2 sprues at the same price as other boxes.

===

Chroma:  Yes, the model count is dorked up compared to the army lists.

If you mix Havocs with normal CSM in your stand composition (i.e. 1 havoc per stand like normal) and throw in the requisite character models and put beastmen and cultists in the same coven, 1 box (assuming 2 sprues) gives 1 CSM retinue and 2/3 of a coven.

If 2 people each buy 2 boxes and trade off factions, each would have 2 retinues, 2 cult marine upgrades, 1 formation of Chosen and 20 daemons.  That's about 1500 points of infantry, not including the Cultists.

That's about only ~250 points of Cultists... *ouch*

I'm so glad I got my 5 Covens cheaply off eBay!  *laugh*

At least the "greatcoat" IG troopers can make good Cultists now too... and Ogryn as Big Mutants.

Yep.

I have been recommending using the Cultist models for leader/character stands and using stock IG for the Cultists themselves.  You'll have way more daemons than you need long before you have enough cultists, so using them as squad leaders or characters fronting basic IG gets good use out of the cultists.

Yep mixing up IG and cultists is both appropriate and necessary.

More of problematic when you want to have different look for cultist and traitor IG...Guess I'll follow this route:

Marine stands: 3+2 chaos marines and loyal marines or otherway around
Cultist stands: 3-4 cultist+1-2 IG troopper. All beastmens go here(including the few all beastmen stands I have)
Traitor IG: 5 IG trooppers.

Still I think I need to buy somewhere around 3-4 boxes easily...Ah well. Atleast there's something to buy which is infininently better than nothing. And hey. They might have released them in resin through forgeworld in worst case scenario :D

Just something that occured to me on monday while planning purchaces for chaos(crazy me planning purchaces something like 4 or even 6 months early but hey it's epic :D). Chaos predator. Weapons: 2 lascannons and autocannon. We won't get metal model for that so presumably need to use loyal marine versions. Problem: You can only make 2 predator per blister that way...

Okay you can just say regardless of weapons they are all chaos predators with that weapons but I like to have my tanks WYSIWYG if possible. Anybody knows wether they have changed chaos list to have predator destructors and annihilators rather than the one(rather crappy as well) weapon combination?

Makes me more and more glad my variant chaos list describes more recently fallen marine chapter and thus is only logical to have standard destructors and annihilators. Will be pain to field these in tournament though without going for WYSIWYG :-(

My philosophy regarding cultists:  Everybody can be a cultist!  :p  Any spare models I have get to join my Chaos cult.  Funny how they 'volunteered' for that duty. :p

Well I'll be bulking out cultists as well with IG trooppers(otherwise by the time I get enough cultists I have totally silly number of chaos marines. By all rights cultists should outnumber marines, not the otherway around  :p ).

I'm applying this philosophy to zombies.  In addition to various random IG models, I have a pile of mismatched torsos and legs (stuff like the legs off an Ork warboss that was cut up to make a nob biker) that will be glued together into oddly shaped humanoids.  I also plan to use a lot of the old, SM/TL era bulk orks for zombies because they're smaller and more in line with the newer human models and I have a blue boatload of them.

Another idea for cultists if you are going with a Slaanesh theme would be to use Eldar Guardians.  The old plastic guardian/falcon sprues tend to be dirt cheap on ebay and the helmet shape is similar to the chaos cultists on the chaos sprues.  I think with some cultists mixed in you could make a unified but freaky looking force.
