It looks like my old uni has decided to scrap the idea of educating the future generations.

Reading closes physics department

It seems it is costing too much money to teach people physics compared to childrens lit, so the department has to go.

I can kind of understand why.  Physics is portrayed as a boring subject, and a hard one, so why should kids bother spending years learning something that wont get them a job.

Though I surpose that it will sort out the physics teacher shortage if everywhere stops teaching it.

Ah yes the wonders of a money driven education system.

A lot of Universities are now having to cut Science services such as this, Exeter has also had to stop part of their degree courses due to under subscription and costs I believe.

Bit of a worry when the most popular courses are more generalist subjects such as media studies, english and film studies.  Where will we get our specialists from?

Then again a lot more of the modern unviersities are offering courses and linking them with specific jobs and vocational oppurtunities.  Which hopefully is a good thing.

Another Reading alumni? Hi.

The ripples of the governments decision to impliment student fees, I am afraid. I know of a couple of universities which landed martgages and debts on buildings in order to purchase long term lecturer contracts, hundreds of course books and other items, only for student numbers to drastically fall when the students actually had to pay for their education.

Unfortunately, some subjects (those with less perceived employable potential) suffered harder than others.

It's understandable, but I hate to see this happen.

The problem with tailoring education to a specific job is that while you get good knowledge of that particular field you get little or no cross education in others.  Okay if you never do anything other than what you trained for, but, also leads to less innovation.  Physics, while considered difficult and boring by most, is a core doctrine for understanding all sorts of different things.  As my physics teacher once said, it allows you to put all that advanced math into real world actions and scenarios.  Makes me sad, really, to hear of this.  :(

Yup - good point, I-drax, where would we engineers be without in? Hammering titan ankle joints to get them to budge and offering litanies whilst sprinkling lube oil. And all this while science and engineering and medical subjects are supposed to be promoted further. Sad.

That's so true. Once I started taking physics and engineering classes in college I was able to see all that calculus I learned (well, supposed to learn  :D  ) in real life applications.

I'm a firm believer that there is more to college than just learning skills and knowledge for a specific job.

It is the same with me DS.  After sixth form and uni I could see how some of maths could be applied to every day uses (such as mechanics) and that some of maths is useful for "other stuff" (all other maths).

One of the problems I had trying to get a job with a physics degree was that no one seems to know what to do with you!  They would be willing to employ maths students but not physics.  That is why I'm now training to be a teacher (those who can't, teach)

CS, what did you study at Reading?

You'll have more chance of a job with physics than archaeology - even if you did go to the country's premier educational institution (Durham for the ignorant among you!) :-)
