I have just moved house. The result of this is that half of my stuff is in boxes but at least in the same room, and the other half is in 'storage'. Looking at it, I noticed that I have literally piles of unpainted stuff (as do we all), and very few bits painted - and even those were finished years ago and bear no resemblance to a coherent force.
So, I have decided to make a fresh start. I am going to almost totally start again, and while I will keep to the forces that I have collected simply because I have loads of minis waiting for me, I will try to create new lists and forces for the various games.
Also, I will focus on one force for one game - not exclusively, but in an effort to get a small, usable army together for something.
In order to keep myself dedicated, I thought that I would document my progress here. My first force will be for Epic, hence the location of this thread. Note that the goal here is to end up with a force that I can play with, and while I do want to concentrate on one force for one game, I will allow myself the odd diversion into some different miniatures, scales, etc.
GASP - As your illustrious web admin displays bags and boxes of miniatures unpainted.
RECOIL - As I spend around three weeks gluing five guys to a flat bit of plastic.
LAUGH - As I get bored with the whole affair and the end result is yet more miniatures half base coated!
But, I dont mind so much. I am enjoying the experience and this will really just be for my own gains.
So, having decided that I really need a good Epic force, the spotlight falls on exactly which force to work on. The contenders are:
Tau - These guys are languishing in a box, used for playtesting and checking out specific rules and scenarios. On the one hand, they would be great to work on and have a nice force of. However, the rules being mostly stable but with potential change could make it difficult. In addition, I really want my Tau to be one of my showcase forces, and not rush them. Since this drive is about a force in a short time, they may not be ideal.
Genestealer Cult - All things being equal, the Cult would be my first choice. They have a huge variety of units, I could use miniatures from anywhere I liked and this would help the enthusiasm (something that I really suffer with). However, the two problems with these are that the list still needs updating and some work, and that they are a totally home-grown force. So, it would be very difficult to take them elsewhere for a game (if it ever came up). This first force should really be something that I can use as often as possible and against anyone.
Eldar - These are the most likely choice right now. While my Craftworld doesnt use the Swordwind list, the variation is not so huge, the stats for all the units are almost identicle and the basis of the list is established. Old hands here may recall the discussion that went into putting my Eldar force list together, and I am happy with the result. In addition, the variety of units and Aspect Warriors should keep things interesting and different. The only real drawback with these guys is the number of seriously excellent Epic Eldar forces that have been showing up recently. I cant hope to match those!
Tyranids - My Tyranid Seeding Swarm would be cool, but since it is infantry based, it could get repetative quickly. Again, the list needs some tuning and is probably best left until further play testing is possible.
Squats - So tempted by these! I would love to work on my Squats, but they suffer from all of the above problems. No stats (I use my own list for them), no concrete list, no models available, no 'official' stamp for games, etc. Still, they would be really cool!
So, those are the five possibilities. Notice that I have left out any Orks (too many greenskins and detail work for this attempt), Chaos (coming soon, miniatures will be easier to come by then!), Marines (dont capture my interest so much), etc.
Comments would be appreciated, but the Eldar are looking most likely at this point.
Thanks.
