OK, I am still plugging away at my Ork army and I have some questions concerning basing certain type of units.

Gamewise, which units have to have bases? ?

I gather:

- infantry
- bikes
- dreads
- artillary ?

I take it not all units need to be based, right?

Obviously, certain models will just balance better with a base, especially the Titan-types. I am wondering about the Skorchas... that small connection between the trakk and the trailer section seems a bit delicate and could benefit from a base.

I like how most models look without a base. I think of Jimbo's photos of his Kult of Speed, or Marine vehicles in his cityfight boards, and how much more of a 'realistic' image it is without bases. ?

Does anyone find problems with some units based and some not?

Thoughts?

NightSerpent,

The only thing that is based without question is infantry as far as I know.

Everything else is optimal as far as basing goes.

Does anyone know if JJ finally decided to do the three light vehicles per base thing?

I base:

- infantry - Squares, rectangles or pennies
- bikes - 20x40 Warmasters and some old squares
- dreads - pennies except for some old squares
- artillary - Only older arty on squares. I hope to base newer pieces on 20x30mm custom plasticard bases

If you don't want to base your Skorchas, either reinforce the hitch, magnetize it, or just leave them detached.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I believe that died. He went with the armor save adjustment.

I am not a great fan of basing

- infantry - it's got to be done, mine are all 40mm x 10mm rectangles (though if I ever build a Tyranid army the infantry will be on pennies)
- bikes and cavalry - mine are on 40mm x 20mm bases
- dreads - 20mm x 20mm bases
- artillery - I don't actually base ?my artillery

I do base Titans, but this is (a) they fall over (b) they seem to need one for the rules (base to base contact).

My Skorchas have never been based and work fine (never fallen apart), my friend Simon has used the Skorcha trailers with Imperial Hellhounds

they are not based and the "connection" has held.

thanks

but that is the reason why I don't base, it looks more realistic.

FWIW, the E:A playtest rules say "artillery stands must have one artillery piece and between two and six crew models."

Guess I'll need to reserve some gretchin slaverz and meks! ????

I am getting the impression that Epic is much less about rules lawyering than other systems (eg NO POINTS VALUES!!), so I'm sure anything goes as long as it doesn't end up giving some unfair advantages.

Oooppss!

Jimbo,

I do base my Gargants and Titans too!

MY Ork artillary is loose right now, but I think that it would look better on bases with crew.

I like the look of robots, dreads, etc. much better on round penny bases. The square bases look a little more clunky.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I did base my Ork Skorchas for exactly the reasons stated, i.e. the small surface area on the joint seemed too fragile. ?They fit perfectly on a 3/4" craft stick cut to length (about 18mmx36mm, iirc).  I usually base items that are LVs in the current rules because I think they are easier to handle while playing.  Based buggies, for instance, are far less likely to tip over and go tumbling down a hillside because of an errant die bouncing off the hill.

I do agree that un-based figs generally look better on the tabletop, though.

I have not done it, but I like the look of the large skimmers when mounted on flying stands. ?That's probably my only exception to unbased looking better.

I guess then a lot also depends on the type of hills you use.

My hills are , well rather than describe them I will show them:

You can see that the "slopes" are quite steep and therefore we fudge movement around them.

Though as you can see from this image, 20mm square bases seem to work okay.

The only other unit I would base (as seen here with Simon's models) are Space Marine Attack Bikes.

The other piece of advice I would say is "don't throw your dice at the hills"; actually I try to use a box off table for throwing dice.

I never could stand gamers who believe that they are more likely to get a 6 if they forcefully throw the dice across the width of the table, rather than just throw them gently in a small area!

I do agree that un-based figs generally look better on the tabletop, though.

My personal opinion is I agree with that, and if you can get it to work with flyers, it can look really good.
