It's the overall pose of the body that is the problem. There's no sense that the Avatar could actually strike with any force from that position. It's like it's posing and brandishing a sword rather than fighting. I agree you could make him hold a spear instead relatively easily, but he'd still just be holding a spear.
I think I could also go for a double bladed sword similar to a large haladie or the Tau honor blade but I think that would be a much trickier conversion to pull off and make it look right.

Gak!
Now I have this incredible mental image of an eldar army converted so they are using spears, all done in kung-fu style dynamic poses with lots of staff-like spinning of the spears.
Avatar
Farseer/Warlocks
Banshees - leaping and pirouetting, ribbons from the blades, generally holding hafts far from the blade
Scorpions - ducking and near prone, tassles that match the headdresses on the spears (new models), serrated blades, some behind-the-back grips (like Achilles in the movie Troy)
New wraithlord - spear instead of wraithsword

I prefer a striding to a fighting pose. It?s like he?s so hard and scary he doesn?t actually need to bother hitting anyone
?Make way, weaklings!?
The pose is one of the things I don?t like about the current GW model (well, I don?t really like anything about the GW model).

The sword is too small. Bigger sword is needed imo.
