Well, got in one whopping 3000 point game this weekend in a playtest of the newest Eldar changes.  A big fight against "enhanced" Marines.

Rules Used

All experimental rules (except air rules)
Eldar 1.7

Space Marine Changes:

1) Cost changes (+/-25 points)
- Vindicator det, 275 (-25)

Chroma and his suspence building, you gotta love it. You start reading, a bit of rules then the forces and then some cool picks, then he leaves you hanging. Stay tuned, sounds like a ripper coming up, after supper that is. LOL. I look forward to reading this one.

And he is trying to bamboozle us with the pictures - in which I count 8 rhinos (seems like the Assault marines have done a bit of "foraging"). :p

On which point, Chroma you have raised a question by upgrading to one Razorback for each of the tacticals. Is that legal? I always thought you had to pay for two Razorbacks to actually replace the Rhino rather than augment it (but I do quite like this alternative if it is actually legal)

Hey Ginger!  Good eye, but if you check the FAQ in the back of the rulebook, yep, it's legal to do the "spare Rhino" trick!   Almost all our local Marine players do it, just to give the Marines a little boost.

Both Tactical Detachments have 3 Rhinos and 1 Razorback, while Tactical 1 also has a Hunter and a Vindicator attached, bulking them up a bit.

Anyway, on with the report!

Garrisons and Deployment

Only the Avatar was kept in reserve. (This was one of the few games where I decided not to take a Wraithgate for Eldar, so, my opponent promptly selected the 'Gate model to be used as his own Blitz Objective, instantly creating a cool "story" for our fight!)

Marines garrisoned the Devastator and Scout, both in cover and on overwatch.

Eldar garrisoned both Ranger formations in cover and on overwatch.

Turn 1

No teleports.

Strategy roll: Eldar

The clouds part and rays of sunshine stream down as the Nightwing Squadron makes a ground attack against the Whirlwind Detachment.  The Devastator's Hunter fails to lock on and the Eldar aircraft savage 2 of the Marine missile tanks.

Aspect Warhost 2 mounts up and doubles against the Scout Detachment, debussing into cover and suffering a Blast marker from overwatch fire.  The Eldar's return fire is equally ineffective and they also only place a single Blast marker.

With only a single tank able to launch, the Whirlwinds sustain fire on Aspect Warhost 2 and are able to get five infantry and three tanks under their 1BP template? and do no damage at all.

The Assault Detachment takes to the sky with a loud battle cry, descending on Ranger Troupe 2.  The sneaky Eldar are taken by surprise and their wild overwatch fire has no effect on the attacking Marines who wipe out the Eldar picket force without suffering a hit.

Swords of Vaul 1 doubles forward on a hit-and-run pop-up attack against the entrenched Devastators, but the vicious overwatch fire of the heavily armed Marines knocks a Fire Prism and a Firestorm from the sky, breaking the grav-tanks before they can even fire!

The Warhounds race forward on a double, striding directly through the intervening ruins to attack Aspect Warhost 2.  Warhound 1 takes 1DC damage from stepping in a pothole during the trip.  The Titans unload everything on the Aspect Warriors, trashing 2 Wave Serpents and the Falcon, but the Eldar stand firm.

The Dark Reapers of the Aspect Troupe mount up and double close to the Warhounds.  The Falcons of the Troupe knock down 3 Void shields and do 1DC damage to Warhound 1.

The Autarch leads her Warp Spiders (and two Swooping Hawks) forward to engage the Warhounds in a firefight, with the support of the Aspect Troupe.  

Warhound 1 is destroyed before it can react and Warhound 2 loses another Void shield, suffers 1DC damage, kills a single Warp Spiders, and breaks.  The Eldar move forward to grab some cover and harass the nearby Marine formations.

Trying to get a measure of revenge, the Land Raiders double up to fire on the Aspect Troupe, but only manage to take out a single Falcon.

The Guardians double up the hill to fire on the Assault Detachment, but only cause the Marines to duck a little.

Tactical HQ doubles forward to fire on the Guardians and manages to wreck 1 Support Weapon.

The Windriders double over the hill to fire on the Tactical HQ, but they do no damage.

Tactical 1 doubles as well, coming straight forward to open fire on the Windriders, dropping a Jetbkike.

Swords of Vaul 2 prepares to double into action, but seeing what SoV 1 suffered through, they only slowly move forward, despite the Autarch's pleas.

Ranger 1 stays hunkered down on overwatch.

End of Turn: All formations except the surviving Warhound rally on both sides, though many Blast markers remain on the Eldar. (Wow, removing Spirit Stones in it's entirety makes a *big* difference!)

Turn 2

The Avatar shows up, right in the thick of things?


Strategy roll: Marines

Seeing the raging Eldar God before them, the Marines take some time to decide what to do (My opponent had a lot of options available and wasn't sure which gambit to start with).  Finally, Tactical 1 sustains fire on the Avatar? placing 1BM. (My opponent hoped to break/crit the Avatar as it was the possible link for my performing a combined assault.)

The Marine Supreme Commander takes his Detachment and the Assault Marines in a combined attack against the intermingled Avatar, Guardian Warhost and Windriders.

The battle is brutal and long fought, lasting 2 turns.  The Avatar suffers 2DC damage, the Guardians lose 1 Wraithguard, 1 Heavy Weapon, 1 Support Weapon, and 2 Guardians, while the Windriders are untouched.  The Marines? are wiped out? barely.  The Avatar breaks and the Guardians are holding on by a thread? but they are victorious!


Aspect Warhost 2 doubles forward to get close to Tactical Detachment 1 and manages to take out a single Rhino in the process.

The Warp Spiders then jump forward to engage Tactical Detachment 1 which proceeds to counter-charge into the Aspect Troupe and the Windriders!  The Devastators and Land Raiders are in support range as is the Guardian Warhost as another big battle develops.

Again the battle lasts two rounds? and again it goes poorly for the Marines. Only the Librarian and his Razorback survive to flee the fray, though the Eldar have lost 2 Jetbikes, 1 Vyper, 2 Falcons, 1 Dark Reaper and 1 Swooping Hawk, which does break the Jetbikes and the Aspect Troupe? but it is not worth the cost of so many of humanity's finest warriors.

The battered Whirlwinds sustain fire on Aspect 2, placing 1 Blast marker.

The Scouts attempt to sustain fire on Aspect Warhost 2, but the loss of so many Marines has shaken them and their inaccurate fire manages to kill only a single Striking Scorpion.

Swords of Vaul 2 double forward and back, popping up on a hit-and-run attack against the Land Raiders and manage to core one of the heavy tanks.

The Devastators sustain fire on Aspect Warhost 1 killing 2 Warp Spiders and 1 Swooping Hawk, breaking the Eldar formation.

The survivors of Swords of Vaul 1 double forward against the Land Raiders, but do no damage.

Aspect Warhost 2 marshals, moving in to cover and removing 4 Blast markers? leaving 3 still on them.

The Land Raiders advance towards Aspect Warhost 2, but only place a 1 Blast marker.

In an act of insane bravado, Ranger Troupe 1 engages the Land Raiders!  One Ranger is killed, but they manage to breach 1 Land Raider and the Eldar narrowly win, pushing the Marine tanks away. (Gotta love sniper in firefights!  Of course, I forgot to put the attack on the Librarian's tank, and was just going for the -1 to armour saves.  *laugh*)

The Nightwings decide to stand down, and remove all their Blast markers instead of attacking?

End of Turn: All Marine formations rally, while the Aspect Troupe and Windriders fail for the Eldar.

The Librarian of Tactical 1 marches all the way back to protect the Marine Blitz objective.

The Whirlwinds then sustain fire on Aspect Warhost 2, killing 2 Fire Dragons and 1 Dire Avenger, breaking the formation, which flees behind the hill.

Swords of Vaul 1 double up to the Land Raiders? and place a single Blast marker.

The Land Raiders return the favour by sustaining fire on Swords of Vaul 1 and wipe them out!

Securing Marine Objective 2, the Devastators go on overwatch.

The Nightwings make another appearance as they ground attack the Scouts, destroying both Rhinos.

The remaining, full-charged and shielded, Warhound doubles straight over the hill, through ruins, takes 1DC damage, and then unleashes hell on the broken Aspect Warhost 2, completely annihilating it.

The Guardian Warhost doubles towards the Devastators, who pick off 1 Guardian and 1 Support Weapon, preventing them from contest Marine Objective 2.

Hunkered down in the ruins, the Marine Scouts go on overwatch.

The Eldar Rangers march, spreading themselves out in a long line to secure the Eldar Blitz and Eldar Objective 1.

Aspect Warhost 1 marches forward, up close to the Devastators, to contest Marine Objective 2.

Swords of Vaul 2 advance on the Warhound and blast away its Void shields and last DC, sending it tumbling to the ground?

End of Turn: Everything rallies except the Aspect Troupe.

Turn 4

Strategy roll: Eldar (on a tie)

The Guardians sustain fire on the Devastators taking out the Hunter and 1 Devastator unit.

The Warp Spiders then jump forward to engage the Devastators.  Each force loses one of their members, but the Eldar are narrowly victorious and push the Marines off their Objective, claiming it for their own.

The Whirlwinds sustain fire on the Guardians, taking out 1 Wraithguard a 1 Heavy Weapon, breaking the Warhost.

The Land Raiders double on Swords of Vaul 2, killing 1 Fire Prism and 1 Fire Storm, breaking the formation!

The Nightwings ground attack the Scouts, but they Marines are too dug in to be hurt by the attack.

The Rangers, spread out and feeling exposed, go on overwatch.

The Librarian advances through the ruins, just near enough to the Marine Blitz to hold it, and snaps a shot off at the Warp Spiders, breaking them and forcing them to flee.

Realizing it's all resting on their shoulders, the last surviving Jetbike unit of the Windriders marches into the Marine half of the battlefield to claim Marine Objective 2.

Knowing they just have to double out of cover to fire on the Jetbike to secure the battlefield, the inexperienced Scouts wind up holding and regrouping?

End of Turn: Guardian Warhost and Swords of Vaul 2 rally.

Tie-breaker: Biel-Tan 1976 vs Space Marines 2175 - Marine Victory by 199 points!

Hey Hena!

I just use Microsoft Photo Editor and Microsoft Paint to edit and title the maps.  I've used Adobe Illustrator on occasion, but it's almost too much power for what I'm doing.  *laugh*

I've never tried GIMP though.
