I plan for my Tzenntch Warlord some kind of lightning effekt made from wire too. Don't know if painting it will make it look good :(

No fixative. Only at the two ends of the guitar string. The best way to make cotton more resistant is to take a big piece of it and to reduce its size you just twist it over the guitar string. Like this you're going to have a "solid" piece of cotton an then you can work a little on the surface of the cotton to add a "cloudy" effect.
