'Space barbarians' was a throwaway comment, but it stuck hooks in my brain and made my fingers push a pencil around.

These are brainfarts, confused ideas for basic troopers. ?Bog-standard fantasy barbarians with horned helms and guns, that might feasibly be painted in tones of black or green. ?Also, others in more ornate armour, with a slight classical twist, which may be suited to pink or blue shades. ?Then close combat specialists that are resolutely red. :;):
The armour contains powered systems, but isn't what I'd call powered armour. ?They also need a lot more work.

However, I have been working on powered armour - suits stolen or looted from government institutions that would be cosmetically modified and so prized that barbarians would have to be chosen to wear them.
A pageful of slowly developing ideas, and a clearer collection of elements that most pleased my eye. ?Still some work to be done (like what he looks like from the back) and details to be added.

I tried to make sure these were different from GW terminators and Mongoose exosuits, but not too different (because, as I might have mentioned, Mongoose exo-suits are the best powered armour designs I've seen). ?Any similiarities to other companies' powered armour designs are coincidental, and hopefully non-existent, because they're mostly rubbish.

Any opinions, suggestions?

Now, I was figuring on sculpting a few of these, just as a diversion - to see if I can - y'know? ?However, if they turn out well enough, and if certain February announcements don't pan out to the gaming public's satisfaction... well, there's a company I know of called The Figure Trader, which I might contact.

This one I would buy in both 6mm and 15mm based on this drawing as a starting point.

WOW, this man can draw! ?That's some nice work. ?

I hope you're going to draw us some nice cover art for the Slann army book!

I really like the concepts. ?The powered armor is very good, but the indiv. infantrymen really blew me away. ?These guys really are space barbarians or possibly space gladiators from the look of them. ?No IP issues here!

So, how long does it take you to crank out a sculpt?

Too flamin' long.  If I start now I might have one or two done by Feb. '07 :p

Dafrca: that was the first one, a try at a basic suit before the barbs get their grubby mitts on it.
If the barbarians go according to plan, I'll probably try that idea next (or should I sculpt unmodified armour, get that cast, and barb up a few casts for recasting?), except I'm not completely fond of the huge head-shadowing hump.  IMO it makes it look a little too much like this (and others), which might be more realistic but looks a little weird and ungainly to me.

I could stand to compromise, though.  That's why I posted these here.

Ta all!

Given a choice, I like the idea of a basic suit with interchangeable heads and ?bitz? for add on to make it more ?Barbaric?.  But then I live as much in the 15mm world as I do 6mm. :;):

I agree. There is always a little struggle between ?Cool? and ?Realistic? in my opinion. I have always liked my Power Suits to be somewhere between regular armor and mini-tanks. Thus I do not mind some bulk. But I know that is a subjective thing.

Either way, I look forward to seeing where you take this project.  :D

Hullo all: I'm back. :D ?After my hiatus I felt I had to escape from the somewhat less mature world of 25mm+ gamers.

Here's the consolidated figure again, and also some later, confused sketches trying to figure out what the sides and back should look like.

http://img312.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... an3wq7.jpg

I don't like the chevron-shaped jump exhausts - too much like transformers or some kind of electric-shaver car. ?So I thought I'd swipe those from a Harrier, which I like, but could use a bit of modification - and those are in the top-right corner.
I drew these ages ago, and now that I've looked at them again I have a few more ideas. ?So hopefully I should get something done with putty rather than pencil, before too long.

Any thoughts or suggestions, yerselves?

I had not realized, but my tastes must be fairly stable.

Look at the Robot I bought and the suit you drew that I liked. Not saying they are the same, but the style is simular. And I liked both.

I must be predictable.

Actually I like the jump jets. However, I think the "toes" of the suit look a bit too "titan-ish" (ref. Reaver),  wouldn't mind if the foot looked more like a foot.  :) Other than that small detail I think it's briliant.

Very impressive designs and drawings Vermis, looking forward to finding out where all this leads to.
I like the individual soldiers best so far, the power suit is great but I'm not sure how barbarian it is yet, it doesn't quite fit with the regular troops, however I'd be tempted to buy lots, just not as barbarians

Dafrca: that' not a bad-looking robot.  I might nick a few elements from that.

Mojarn: those were an effort to avoid the simple 'boot' design that everyone and their granny does.  And I thought they might use some kind of stabilisers to avoid tipping over.  But so far it's been optional.

Justiniel: I know.  It bugs me a bit too.  But my reasoning is that the pirates don't manufacture suits themselves, so they have to hijack or loot them from less extralegal groups.  I dunno how much they could modify them, beyond the... er, horns and spikes that everyone and their granny does...
