I hope to get to building my Tyranids soon (other than the small army built now to play them once ina while) and I want to build them Markco-style on pennies.
I live in the US and our pennies are smaller. US pennies are 18mm in diameter.
Anyone out there willing to send me some pennies?
Is there any difference in size between UK and Canadian pennies?
I'm pretty sure what I want are UK ones since the Canadian ones are pretty small like the US ones if I remember correctly.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Primarch,
I have a few units that are based on UK pennies. They're definitely bigger.
The gist of the difference is that it's easier to fit Tyranid infantry on the bigger UK penny than on the smaller US penny.
I'm thinking about mounting just three Gargoyles per penny.
The Lictors will look much better on pennies than on cut-down rectangular bases.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi!
Have you considered visiting a hardware store for those "metal washers" that cover electrical outlet holes for the electrical pipes?
They are fairly large and suitable as bases, you may be able to get them for free since they fall off relatively easily and it's the outlet that costs anyway. It might be worth a try.

I haven't.
Do they have a hole in the center?
Do you know the diameter in metric and/or imperial measure of those washers?
Having said that, I know that the UK pennies make great infantry bases. Markco's stuff looks great. I have a few UK pennies now and have tried placing different arrangements of Tyranid infantry on them now and I'm very pleased with the results.
I've also thought about going to a bank or money changer and seeing if I can get some UK pennies there. I haven't tried it yet.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.
P.S. It's odd that I'd know right where to go to get UK pennies in Moscow, but I have no idea where to do it in Sacramento, USA!

As a cheap/free alternate, hunt down a couple coin-op vendors. Most of them end up with various tokens that people try to use to rip off their machines, and some will give them away for free.
I used to work for a newspaper, and at one time I had several hundred of them in a bag. I'd send some, but I have no idea if I still have them, or where they would be if I do.

Hi!
They don't have a whole in the center.
Let me explain:
You outlet in the wall has a plastic cover that goes on top of a metallic box inside the wall that houses the actual "plug" and wiring. That "casing" is where the electrical pipes are screwed into to take cables to and from you breaker box.
Now, when that "casing" is new you have to "punch" the premade holes to fit the pipes. There are 6 holes and the pre-punched holes are covered with these "washers" . Sometimes in the bin where they are sold these washers come off and are loose in the box.
The size varies, but it is between a nickel and a quarter, more or less. My brother is an electrician and I'll find out what the "correct" term for these things are. I think it would be a far cheaper alternative.

It's hard to get cheaper than pennies!

CyberShadow,
Your Lictor looks fabulous!
I might take you up on the offer of UK pennies if I can't find them locally.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.
