Lets say I have 6 portals.
Lets say 3 of them are close together and within 15 cm of 3 formations.

Can a commander activate a multiple engage through the portals?

I think it is possible!  Because you are NOT breaking any of the rule requirements (neither from portals or from engage rules).

wHAT do you say?

There is no commander within necrons, only supreme commanders. And they cannot use portals. So the question is moot.

Actually, it's not "moot".

A C'tan closer to the enemy than two nearby Phalanxes, with Monoliths all around, could perform the Engage and try to move the Phalanxes into better "flanking" positions with the Portals in an attempt to surround the enemy or some such.

The C'tan moves forward, while the other formations use Portals to get there.

An unusual situation to be sure, but certainly possible!

I believe Chroma is right.  You could conceivably have two formations next to two portals and the C'tan. Using the Commander function you could order an Engage, move the two formations through the portals and the C'tan then toward the enemy to his full movement.  Per the FAQ the Commander formation does not have to be in range of the enemy, only one of the commanded formations in order to have a successful engage action.

With that said, you could get two formations assaulting, plus the C'tan if he can make it there.

My only reservation is that the three formations would not be in coherency with each other (5cm between each formation's furthest units).  I don't know if that would affect the legality of the move.  Of course, this is a question about the Commander function in general. ???

Well, being a 3DC war engine, the C'tan could be up to 15cm away from at least one unit from the other attacking formations... and if this was all part of some "bracketing" attack via 4 Monoliths surrounding an enemy (perhaps avoiding Grots or Daemons at the forward edge of an enemy grouping) they might all still be in coherency...

Certainly an unlikely situation to ever come up, mind you.  *laugh*
