I believe that is exactly what they are going for. If they can work it to go the longer distance, it would be real nasty.

During WWII the Brits were training a unit of Gurkhas for Airborne Ops.  When they were told by the Brit OIC that they would be jumping from an aircraft at 1200 ft. They all seemed quite concerned !  The Gurkha NCOIC asked since it was their first jump, if they could jump at 500 feet ?  The Brit OIC said, that they'd be wearing parachutes !  The NCOIC said, "Oh, that'd be alright then, Sir !"      :laugh:   Supposedly a true story ! :;):

Hey !  I got 2 sets of wings !  Parachute and Air Assault !  I'm dumb enough to jump out of perfectly good airplanes and slide down ropes out of helicopters !  :D

Nah, that just makes you willing.

Lots of people do things that they know are dangerous willingly because of other reasons. Firemen go into burning buildings for example. They do it for Honor, not for a lack of brains.  :;):

I'm just waiting for the Stealth transport.  Imagine a SEAL platoon doing a really high HALO drop (say, from 40,000 feet or more AGL) out of a B2 (which supposedly does not have enough of an RCS to detect at that height ...  At least the Brits claim that they got an iHawk or whatever their homebrew SAM is to track a B2 between 5-8 miles away, as it was approaching to land/flyby for an airshow, which is pretty close to the same distance).

For those times that an ASDS isn't able to get in.

There's only one thing crazier than a military parachutist.  Smokejumpers.  Jump out of a perfectly good airplane, into a forest fire?  They must be nuts!
