Ran across an interesting article about a ram-air wings mounted on a man, combined with a parachute. He could be dropped miles from his target, fly closer and parachute the remaining distance.
Not Sci-Fi, it is now.

Wow ! ? That would be perfect for SF Spec Ops insertions ... Maybe they are already in use ! ? In the "old days", SF would drop at high altitude with O? tanks, fall/sail to the target. ?Opening their square highly maneuverable chutes, when the DZ is in site ... very cool ! Thanks Daf !

Poor chap, they stuffed him and put him in a museum....
Oh, wait, no, that's a new scale for FW models, right?
Ok, only kidding - interesting, but I sure wouldn't like to try it out. Wouldn't a high altitude drop be as good for insertion?

Based on my experience, I'm guessing the ram air wings would have a longer range then a HALO jump ... But I don't know the exact specs ...

Quote (Legion 4 @ 24 June 2006 (23:13)) | Based on my experience, I'm guessing the ram air wings would have a longer range then a HALO jump ... But I don't know the exact specs ... | Here is a quote from one source:
As it is now, the system allows operation units to jump from a height of about ten kilo-metres and to cover a distance of up to 40 kilometres carrying up to 100 kilogrammes of equipment. Parachutists can thus penetrate into areas that are difficult to reach without their transport planes having to fly into a danger zone. At the same time, tracing this almost 100% silent parachute system using air or ground-based radar systems is extremely difficult. Night operations or operations under adverse weather conditions are possible. |
and
The wing is designed to enable parachutists to cover a distance of up to 200 kilometres (in the development stage). |
So I figure the real win here over HALO is the ability to drop and then enter into other air space undetected.

Thanks for the info Dafrca. Ummm... the Orks would love it.... I'd like to see it fly - it looks like it could be a handful to control.

I remember a few years ago someone used a similar piece of kit to this (Only no micro-jets, it was a full glider) to fly across the English Channel and land in france.
As a near-silent insertion method with no radar signiture worth mentioning, it'd be a lot more secretive than HALO jumps, since the transport plane would never get near the drop-zone to be detected.
