Hello everyone,

Just before the price hike info came out from GW, I picked up several blisters of human infantry from DRM, with the intention of using them for the beginnings of an IG army. I have not played Epic in a long time and have never owned an IG army before, so except for a few odd blisters here and there (a Deathstrike, some griffons and/or manticores) I don't really have the vehicles to put together a decent force. Now that the price hike is looming, I'm feeling the pressure to make a purchase soon, so I thought I would ask here what you all would recommend as a decent selection of IG vehicles to own for putting together a typical IG army.

Thanks very much for any help! :)

Hi Talarius,

Welcome to the boards.

IG is in my opinion all about sheer weights of numbers. Initially my suggestion would be the following -

Leman Russ tanks, as many as you can afford basically.  These are the work horse of the army in my opinion.  If you don't fancy paying for the GW company I'd suggest either trying the Forgeworld models or alternately getting the old style ones from either eBay or Chaosorc's website.  You could use the human DRM mdeium tanks as a proxy if you liked.

Infantry, again as many as you can afford.  DRM models are a good alternate as you've found out, especially in the absense of cheap sprues.  The IG inf company does offer 4 ogryns and 4 officers but I expect that the DRM soldiers are still cheaper.

Artillery, I love basilisks and bombards (I prefer NetEpic rules though not E:A) so I tend to always take these.  Again look on eBay for cheaper options or Chaosorc once more.

As for Super heavies and war engines then look at forgeworld for their super heavies (3 for ?18 rather than GW's 3 for ?27)

They also do some nice warhounds which are 2 for ?18.

Overall though it's a case of what you and any potential opponents are happy at playing with and against.

What rules do you play?

um id suggest the following

lemanruss 10

chimeras (supreame commander) 7

war hounds 2

Hydra flack tanks 3

:D  this seems to be the staple of most IG armies

Forgeworld definately is the best pricewise and the quality of the models is good (going by the 2 warhounds I purchased recently). The only problem I have with forgeworld IG is the need to buy in 3's which can be a pain for fielding armoured companies/tank companies.

I don't know US prices VS FW so I've split it into two bits - the FW/SG bit and the SG only bit. You will have to investigate to see what is cheaper.

SG
Stormtroopers
Company of Leman Russ
Sentinels
Rough Riders
The other Deathstrike
2 Packets (4 companies) of infantry

Whats cheaper? FW/SG
4 vultures
4 Valkries
3 Shadowswords
6 Hydra
14 Chimera (gives you upgrade options or just another mech company)
2-4 Warhounds
Artillary. SG gives you 6 Basilisks and 3 Manticores. Pick and mix from FW.

FW only
Packet of LR vanquishers (you will be able to swap the turrets for LR turrets + extras).

JO - get 10 packets and have 3 companies! :)

Thanks for all the helpful replies! I had no idea Forgeworld was cheaper, but it is! Amazing, I never thought I'd see that. I forgot that I had some of the old Baneblades and I think a Shadowsword somewhere, so I *do* have some super-heavies, but the Forgeworld ones are so much nicer. :)

Pardon my ignorance, but what are "JO"?

Thanks again, the help is much appreciated.

JO was short for Joker I think in this instance. Chris was making reference to the post above his.  Instead of having to order the odd one he suggested just ordering an even number that divided by ten! (for a company)

Hi!

I concur that at this juncture you can get most of what you need through FW. They have a good selection at a better price.

Update: It's been a busy time since I started this thread, but I've managed to dig around the house and catalog my entire Epic collection. Thanks to the advice you all have given me,  I've got my IG ducks in a row, but need some additional help on the following Ork models. How many of each would you want to have in your inventory in order to build a decent list?

Battlefortress
Battlewagons
Big Gunz
Buggies & Scorchas
Deth Koptas
Dreads & Killa Kans
Flakwagons
Gunfortress
Ork Landa
Soopa-guns

I've got to say that I've got plenty of Epic stuff already, but my Orks and IG are only partial armies and it irks me that bringing them up to speed is going to cost me $300 or even more. When I debate spending $50 on a boardgame that is entirely self-contained and compare it to spending $300+ on a game that (a) I already own a fair amount of and (b) haven't played in years, but still think is cool in concept, I have to think I'm a bit of idiot to spend even another dime on Epic. :(

Thanks and sorry for the sour grapes

I may have some extra ?4 Battleforts, 5 Wartraks & Gunz, 3 Flakwagons, 3 Weirdboy Tower/battlewagon, and maybe a few others ... working a deal now ... so if you are interested LMK(PM) ... I'm easy ! :D
