sounds good to me

we must remember that there will not be a huge number of entries (if the comps on epic40k.com were anything to go by) and therefore having different categories (beginners, veterans etc) will make life difficult.

one aspect about restricting veterans is that: is this comp, like the Golden Demon, in trying to demonstrate the best painting at Epic scale, or is it, as it sounds, an attempt to get lots of people to submit photographs of painted miniatures?

Me too - we shall make it so.

Is this comp, like the Golden Demon, in trying to demonstrate the best painting at Epic scale, or is it, as it sounds, an attempt to get lots of people to submit photographs of painted miniatures?

As we've laid out, its more the latter than the former. Then this doesn't discourage the vast majority of people (like me) who are very average painters and would otherwise say "I'm not a Masterclass painter and so won't enter." ?

That being said, it is also for people to show off their best painting to their individual standard and share the wealth of miniatures out there in people's collections.

As this issue regards only those who declare themselves veterans, I think this problem will be limited in scope.

To me, this is the very core of the issue. I believe what will happen is there will be some who are in the same "level" as the "veterans" we have here who will not declare themselves as such.

The more I thought about our first answer is became obvious that we made a call based on our trust in a few good people here on this board.

In my mind, this trust is misplaced when applied out to the whole world.

This might sound good amoung those here who "started" this thing. However, once we toss open the door to the "public" and ask/invite anyone who wants to join to send in pictures we have made our "goals" less important in the overall effect.

By this I mean, if Mike the Painter (a fictional person) hears of this comp and thinks he would love to win all the prizes, he enters many items in each catagory. As someone who has painted for years and is a top class painter he will rise to the top of each catagory. However, he has not declared himself a "vetern" painter. This leaves us with one of a few choices:

1) Ignore the quality of his paint jobs and select various other winners

2) Be honest about his quality but, like many local Golden Deamons, have a sweep by only a few people

3) Force him into Vetern Status.

of these, two could be said to be outside the rules as given and could result in a loss of credability for the comp.

Yes the idea was to get lots of pictures, but along with this idea we were thinking this would be more then a one year deal, right? As such do we want to have people, not from this board, join it every year? Do we want to see it grow?

I have seen many websites try and do figure contests. One of the reason so many fail beyond the first few is that they loose credability.

Once we introduced prizes into the picture we increased the chance of attracting people who are not as mature/honest as those who are on this board. There are going to be people who join this comp *only* to win and could not care less about our desire to create a major picture gallery of painted minis.

I will follow the group on this, but I felt the need to voice this opinion.

You raise some excellent and pertinent points there dafrca. ?And ones that have been niggling at me too I will confess. ?Thanks for raising them.

The not-from-this-forum idiot who tries to be greedy is always going to be a problem, but I think it will be even more noticable given the mature attitude and comradely banter here which is so pleasant and relaxed compared to other forums. ?Thus my initial questions about whether we wanted to go external with the Comp.

When it comes down to it, if somebody tries to mess with the comp in such a manner, I will be quite happy to play bad guy and act appropriately. ?I see this as one of my main roles in Moderating the Comp- to keep it fair and stop stuff like this from happening. ?As voting will be private, it will be easier to control. ?Being a nasty moderator when required to those who deserve it doesnt worry me too much- I guess it comes from being in the military :D

I want to see this work and be successful. I want to see great photos of the stuff people are doing. I want to see this raise some needed attention back to Epic.

Seems "I want" a lot  :;):

I hope to get some of the guys in my area to post some of their stuff that is not in my collection. They have said I can post the stuff I have as long as I give credit to their work so I know some of their work will be posted

Anyway, thanks for understanding.

An interesting post.

Firstly, yes I would very much like this competition to become an annual affair - hence the use of the date in the title and email addresses.

The primary goal of this competition, for my mind, is to showcase a load of pictures and minis from as many people as we can, and invite discussion. One thing that I mentioned to Jervis is that the fourth edition has forced a lot of attention on the rules, and the minis (being unavailable in the UK) have been largely ignored.

Yes, by offering prizes we focus the thoughts of the people on winning, but the flip side of this is that we will get more people entering. If 'Mike the Painter' enters because he wants to win, and would not have entered otherwise, is this necessarily a bad thing?

Our goals are the reason for running the competition. If people have different reasons then we will simply have to make sure that we are aware that this could happen, and plan for it.

In addition, by the current rules (and by that I mean including the suggestion above of asking people to select their 'order of preference' for categories of winning), the scenario of Mike who enters all categories to win all prizes wont work, as he can only win a single category. Sure, we could get lots of people who do this, but that is the point of the competition.

I would like this to be as open as possible. I dont want it to be just a select 'elite' group of people entering. If Epic Magazine was running right now, I would try to get it mentioned there for those who dont spend much time online. The requirement of being a member of these boards is simply there to increase awareness of the forums. Anyone can join these boards and so this is not really a restriction.

Thanks for your opinions, and I hope that this explains my views. As it stands, I think that most of the bases are covered on this. If anyone sees something that I have missed, please do let me know. I want this to be fairly watertight - as I want it to be seen as fair and honest, for the same reason that we mentioned above, it wont just be the fine and good people of this community which enter.

Not only is an official no-prize on the way, but you are also currently favourite to win your category!  :D

Woo hoo!

Another no-prize for my vast collection.

Now I have a question: Can I enter in another catagory?

I seem to have lost track of the thread. The aged mind wanders and all that. If not I'll send you the pic for D'Aynes gallery. It's a chaos piece and things look a bit thin in that section.

As always,

Absolutely.

The rules are now being slightly modified to drop the bit about Veteran painters as it simply is far too gard to police.  Anyone and evryone can (and is encouraged) and models as many categories and within a catgeory as many times as they like.

However, you will only be eligible to win a single category.  Where people enter multiple categories they will be contacted to see what their preferences are.  If they state, for example Battleforce, Single entry, Open - and then they win all three (thats you Tuffskull :;): ), you will only get the prize for Battleforce Category.  Prizes in the others will go to 2nd place.

I think this is the fairest method, and reduces the possibility of abuse.  The rules page will be amended shortly to reflect.

Hi Guys,

A quick request for posting in the Painting Comp thread...

Please leave the pinned topics strictly for people to post their entries.  Any comments etc about the entry should be out on a seperate and new thread.  That way, we can see all the entires together, rather than trawling though pages and pages of comments

Many thanks,
Tas

Tas,

I am glad about the veteran bit being dropped, I wasn't sure what category I would fall into  :p

Until it was mentioned I was going to ask what it took to be a veteran ?
