If you gave me all this and said I could do what even I wanted with them, I would make couple of armies. Say 3000 or so points each. These I would paint/base in a theme and they would become my core armies. Like one Desert Colors, One In Imperial Grey, one Snow Colors, and one Olive Green Colors.

Then I would take the rest and create "upgrades and formations and have fun painting them in different themes or styles. Then in play, I would start with units from my core army and add what ever fun stuff I wanted. Like my Ogryn Formations with "Dirty" Chimeras. Or a Formation of Hell Hounds with Special Marks on them. A set of Vanquishers in Ambush Patterns and a set of Demolishers in the Urban Cammo Patters. You get the point.

Just my take.

Currently the paint schemes are somewhat varied. The biggest bunch are in Tundra, the next in standard green (some camoed), then chaps in Urban and finnaly a small contingent in Desert (then random testers like my protype French). At least half though is unpainted.

Infantry wise I have enough to occupy me for the rest of my life, so no limits there.

Something I was considering was a British army style force. So all the rt assets are organised into a number of regiments then split up to the other forces, rather than have them all intergral.

Problem is how to show different regiments but have the same theatre paint scheme?

Denote the formation by painting it's number on the base?

Nah, no one could see that on the model :) I don't need reminding its more a visual theme thing.

Perhaps I should simply make up 6000 points for each Guard army list (plus ones not yet writ) then box it and have future games easy to select?

That's not a bad idea. It would certainly save you time when preparing for future games.

The obvious answer to armoured regiments would be to paint the forward track covers of the hull in the "regimantal colours". If you wanted to go the whole hog, you would draw up the divisional / corps list on a PC giving the regiment, formation composition (and cost) and the colour scheme of the regimnetal "flag". The rear edge of infantry bases can be similarly used - but it is both fiddly, and hard to see - so I would go with painting the underside of bases here. combining these with the relevant armoured transport will give you the mechanised infantry elements.

However, I think I would also go with Dafrica's suggestions, at least in part, ?setting aside a few 'ad hoc' formations to be used for special occasions - campaigns, themed battles, etc.

One last thought is whether you want to make and keep competition armies - if so, the suggestion here is to use a standard colour scheme for a reasonable number of formations, painting the desired formation flag on one part of the hull / base. On the other side of the competition troops, you would then paint a consistent "army" insignia.

Having said all that - keeping the desired formations in a separate box is a much simpler way of acheiving the same result - LOL

If you have enough of the old 2nd ed flag poles, you could use a PC to print out all the unit numbers / names, run them up the flagpole and attach them to each model / infantry base.

OK, Do that. Still nothing stoping you from mixing armies if you want to.  :;):

I think that would look good, but be a lot of work.

However, it is a good idea.

Now I'm tempted to do it for my own Marine army. :D

Wargames Inc, make 6mm decals in the old French method. Spades, Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds in multi-colors ... I've got them and will use these to denote Cos. ...

I have always disliked too many outside markings on my SciFi stuff. I figure FoF signals etc would become normal in the far future. I do not think there would be the need for a lot of markings with the ID of the company or formation. Just my thing.

I think theres always a place for a marking - imagine you are allied with irregular militia, or want a back up to show the generals where you are in there real time satilite imageing.
