Ok so I've finally found someone to start Epic once more. ?To get use to the game once more (before moving onto NetEpic) we decided to play a quick game of 2nd Edition.

The armies were 2500 pts each, just using the battlefield on the floor of my spare room! ?The battlefield was laid out with 4 buildings in a row in each deployment area and 4 bunkers facing each other (Square formation). ?The objectives were on these bunkers.

37 VP was the target.

Kev took the Marines which were a bit limited company wise as I've not really collected them yet. ?I took the Squats, but avoided the super heavies as I didn't feel it would be fair to inflict them on him!

Marines.

Tactical Company
Land Raider Company
Devastator detachment
Whirlwinds
Vindicators
Land Speeders
Predators
Dreadnoughts

Squats

Grand Battery
Gyro company
Brotherhood
Overlord
Goliath
Thunderers
Tarantulars X 2

The game lasted 3 turns and was a great way to get back into the flow of the game.

Turn one.

I won the intiative and after revealing orders, we made the decision to allow Kev to change some of his order counters.  The size of the battlefield was much bigger than we anticipated  so we'd need to advance or charge to get into contact at some point.

Movement phase -

I made kev move first and his armoured fist moved forward past the bunkers capturing both of the objectives in the process.  His land speeders sped down my left flank towards my bunker objectives.  He then advanced the remaining troops apart form the Whirlwinds who were on first fire.

My berserkers and infantry moved forward to contest the bunkers on my side of the board, whilst the gyro's moved forward to support the flanks where Kev's land speeders and land raiders looked like they could easily over run my forces.

First fire.

The servo's on the goliath start to move the barrel ominously around to face the devastator detachment still in their rhino's.  I place the barrage template over the rhinos, easily with in range (man they had good range back then!) and roll for barrage points.. A 6 couldn't believe it!! 10 BP's so 2 plus's to hit, both hit and there goes 2 rhino's and 4 devastator marines.  First blood to the Squats.

Kev's only first fire is the whirlwinds, they target my brotherhood and land a barrage right on top of three of them.  6 BP's means 4+ to hit, only one gets hit and killed.

First fire is back to me now so I take the oppurtunity of firing the rest of my artillery.  Mole mortar shells land amongst the Land speeders and after both battery's have finished there is only 1 left.  This is a great surprise to both of us as usually mole mortars suck big time for us..

Nothing else is in first fire so onto the advance fire stage as there is no close combat.

I don't have anything in range during the advance fire stage so I skip my section of the turn.  Kev's also out of range for all his troops.  End of turn one and it's not going to well for the marines.

Second turn.

I win the initiative again and after revealing orders we proceed onto the movement stage.

Movement phase.

Kev is forced once more to move first. He advances all his troops across the board in an effort to get in range.  He disembarks all the marines with in range of the bunkers on my side of the board.  His last speeder valiantly tries to charge the brotherhood infantry but falls short.  His land raiders are rapidly approaching my right flank so I move my gyro's over there to try and take care of them.  The overlord floats forward once more and gets closer to the tactical company which is in front of it.

First fire.

I take the first shot again and decide to start pouring fire into the tactical company and the supporting predators.  The autocannons pepper the marine infantry killing two stands whilst the battlecannons manage to kill off two predators.

Kev's whirlwinds once more open up on my brotherhood infantry this time killing two units.

The mole mortars and thudd guns open up on the disembarked infantry company and kill another 5 stands and 2 rhinos.

Everything else is still out of range so onto the close combat stage, of which there is nothing to do.

Advance fire phase.

Umm now this is where it could get messy,  Kev's whole land raider company (which at this point is untouched) is on advance fire.  I won initiative so I get to fire first.  My gryo's open up on his land raiders, but the marines armour is able to deflect the autocannon and battlecannon shots easily.  Hte return fire causes 5 of my gyro's to fall gracefully to the ground in heaps...

Nothing much else happened in this turn so onto the third and final turn, with much of the marine armour advancing un opposed down my flank towards my grand battery and goliath.

Third turn.

Umm now onto the final bloody conflicts.  Kev has been advancing carefully over the battlefield and is now in a postition to attack the centre and the right flanks with his armoured fist.  The land raiders on the right are particually frightening as all my shots so far have bounced off them.

Ok so we roll for initiative and place  our order counters.  The Vp's for both sides are very close presently and I've got problems with my iron eagles being to close to the action and very much damaged.

I loose the initiative for the first time in the game and have to move first.... Which isn't what I was hoping for.

Movement phase.

I move my Overlord forward so it's closer to the tacticals and remaining predator.  I then charge my last remaining gyro's against his land raiders and vindicators hoping to slow them down.  Only then is it I realise his land raiders are on first fire so they will get a chance to fire at my gyro's before close combat... ahhhh

Kev's movement phase is mainly advancing his tacticals through the centre and land raider company down the flank.  He does however counter charge my gyro's which have engaged the vindicators in the middle with some dreadnoughs, umm again didn't notice that one..

First fire.

Kev's predator land raider and whirlwinds are all on first fire and decide to try and get rid of the brotherhood troops in the centre so he can capture the first bunker in my side of the table.  Luckily for me his luck with the dice holds true and he only kills another couple of stands which leaves me in control fo the objective.

The land raiders which had been charged by the gryo's promptly blow them out the sky with only one getting through to engage in close combat.

Unfortunately for the tactical company they have now advanced into range of both units of thunderers, and one of the tarantulars.  So after one extremly heavy barrage against them there is a single rhino left from the whole company.

I then proceed to destry two of his whirlwinds with the goliath to gain me a couple VP's.

The overlord continues it's rain of destruction chewing up a couple of land raiders and the remaining devastators.

The mole mortars and thudd guns fail miserably this turn whilst the infantry lasguns bounce off the armour of the land raiders.

Close Combat phase.

Our first close combat phase is bought on by my desire to refresh our memories of the CC rules.  First off the land raider against the gyro.  The gyro tries hard but ends up biting the dust due to Kev's improbably high roll of 11!

Onto the vindicators, backed up now by the dreadnoughts.  Well needless to say the last two remaining gyro's bite the dust and the whole company is now dead...

Advance fire.

My two tarantular battery's fire at Kev's land raiders killing a few with their -2 save modifer, this breaks the company and leaves me in control of the battlefield.

The final shot of the game is one of kev's land raiders firing at the overlord, causing two hits, one of which hits the gondola.  I need a 2+ to save and obviously roll a 1!  It floats on with out controls as the complex machinery controlling it is utterly destryed.

Marines only have a whirlwind, predator, 4 land raiders and three dreadnoughts at the end of the game.

Counting up Vp's Kev has 36 against my 50+

It could have all changed in that last turn and kev got a deserved draw if he'd been in range of my goliath in the last turn with his land raiders. (instead he had to fire at inf units which he couldn't break)

Definately felt good to play again, surprisingly the rules still seemed to come to hand quite easily.

There were a few tactical things that I need to think on for second edition however.

My main issue is what can I use to kill off the land raiders?  Squats really don't have any tanks that can be used to counter other tanks.  I'm thinking trikes with their multimelta's?  Alternately I'll use more goliath's instead of the grand battery so that I have a high save modifier.

Once we've had a couple more normal games then we'll start on NetEpic as it will allow us to use all the models that we have.

Primarch

I'm planning on doing a couple more second edition battles so I'll try and do battle reps for each of them if they are in demand...

Suspect the next lot will be IG vs Marine as I now have a nice CI and four superheavy tanks company's!

Just need some foot sloggers to operate as cannon fodder now.

Or I have a nice Hellbore to hide them in and tunnel my way across the table.
